"File could not open because you do not have permission to view it."

well, i figured out my problem, so maybe this will help some of you.

i have one PDF (main index) that has many links in it to to 12 other PDF files that are quite large. the initial problem was that none of the links would work. they would just say that i didn't have permission...blah blah blah.

so i opened each individual PDF of the 12 larger files. then clicked on the "NAME.PDF 1 of 218" on the top of preview window. it gives you several options, one being "lock". i clicked lock on each of my 12 PDF files and now every link in the main index actually works, sending me to the larger PDF files and the correct page. i'm hopeful it will continue to, but i'm pretty excited that this is working as of now.

Sorry, I'm not used to the protocol here. I was trying to respond specifically to the answer that involved unlocking the iPad to load new files. That worked for me. I'm sorry, I didn't realize my reply would go to the end of the thread.

Back up all data. Quit Preview if it's running.

Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following items, if they exist:

• Caches/com.apple.Preview
• Containers/com.apple.Preview
• Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
• Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist
• Saved Application State/com.apple.Preview.savedState

Launch the application and test.

Select all the pdf files in Finder

Get info for all files (Command-Ctrl-I)

Click "Locked" (In the General section)

PDF links should now work.

If desired, go back and unlock the files the same way. Links should still work.

Thanks, i saved a file in Bluebeam PDF on my windows in parallels and all of sudden all my pdf files I didn;t have permission to on my Mac side. Thanks this corrected it, just don;t know why it happened in the forst place, I do this all the time and never had a problem. Do you have any advicee, thanks.

Question, after doing this, I thought everything was fine, but preview then crashed and I was attaching a pdf to to airmail and then it also crashed. I rebooted and my setting are gone from Preview. Does preview replace these files that were removed? When I go back and look they have not been replaced with new versions.

This is a simple fix.

Close all previews. There may be too many open causing your socuments to crash.

Yep - totally agree. My 'conversion' to Mac has been plaqued with probems. The permissions one is top of my list. Disgraceful - Apple don't seem to care - at all.

An expensive mistake.
