New Mac Mini with LED 24" LED Display

Hello all,

I just got myself a new Mac Mini yesterday. I connected it to my existing 24" LED Display. Prior to this, my display was connected my MacBook (2009) and I have never had any problems. Since yesterday (connected to my Mac Mini), my LED goes black from time to time (0.1 s randomly). There are quite a few theories about why it does this. Since I have never had this problem before, it seems to me that it maybe something to do with the new Thunderbolt port (on MAC mini) which is used for the display as well. In fact I have read an interesting article

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/thunderbolt_macbook_pro_suffers_flickerin g_display_issues/

I suspect the same problem is happening with the new MAC mini.

I am keen to see if there will be a firmware fix from Apple, on either the MAC mini or the Display.

This is a big thankyou to spunky. My story is similar. I purchased a 13 inch titanium laptop then wanted to add the ACD. This combo worked great for years. I recently purchased the new mini and immediately had the black outs and flickering on the ACD. Significantly, not with the laptop connected. I went through 3 apple care sessions and returned the original mini and still no solution. The geniuses at two stores couldn't figure it out. As I contemplated returning the mini for a desk mac and scrapping my expensive monitor, I stumbled on this link. I read the whole thing, optimistic and skeptical as we all are. Finally, I realized I had nothing to lose, except a return to the applestore. I downloaded the update about 30 minutes ago and....nothing. No black outs, no flickering, no freezing/ghosting. So for those of you who get to the end of this blog and have persevered. Then just do it. It's the pot o gold, so to speak. I'll come back here and update soon for any skeptics. Apple support people please take note. My sincerest gratitude to spunky!

I've now successfully flashed two 24" ACD's (which both had the problem) with the [now pulled] new firmware. No issues on either anymore. This is definitely the real fix for the 24" ACD's.

The second monitor which I just updated was absolutely terrible - flashed every 5-10 seconds. Now it's perfect.

I really don't understand why Apple isn't considering this safe to release yet - there must be some people that have problems with it.

Maybe it will show up in software update soon.

In the meantime, I recommend anyone chase up those mediafire/etc links!

I've sent a mail to Tim Cook email address to express my concern on the download being pulled, and I got contacted by an AppleCare representative who gave me the official link to the support page with the official link to the firmware update.

Here is the link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4045?viewlocale=en_US

So contrary to what we thought, Apple didn't pull the update at all, it just make it official.

Nevertheless, I suggested to the representative to add an entry on the Downloads section of the support website to make the KB article more visible and easier to find.

What'm about to ask may sound stupid, but what if, to apply the fix, i DONT have an especially APPLE MOUSE, is it important ? Cause i never had one and it 's just a simple wireless mouse with a little usb thingy to put in usb port.

Will it affect the application of the fix ? Thanks in advance for all your responses and i'm glad to see this issue may resolve itself totally, soooooon

The 24" that i have is the best monitor that I have ever used but it flickered and blacked out all the time.

The fix worked perfectly.

Thank you apple for making a fix. They really should make this fix public, my guess is the range of people this would touch is too small to warrant a official roll out of the patch. That is a shame though as most of the people having this problem will see this thread.

Well,

it has been pulled on the 29th of september and published "officially" only yesterday...

Still it's not very clear how to reach the firmware update without the direct link....

If I go to Support> Other Products > Apple Cinema & Studio Displays > Downloads I can't see the update...

What a strange story.

I know that this is not the best place to ask about it, but I think the problem I have now was started after I updated my ACD 24.

I figured out that now my display is not so loud than it was before. I have all volume settings I found in the system set on the highest position, but a sound I can hear is quiet.

My question is, do you expire the same or similar issue?

Just to chime in - I've also been following this thread and would not have been able to sort out the blackout problem without the help I found here so thanks!

It's not directly related but the bottom of the Apple support page linked to by IFrodo says :

"firmware update information is not easily available via System Information or System Profiler."

Does anyone know if this actually means "...not available at all..." or is there any way to reveal the firmware update info?

Thanks again.
