New Mac Mini with LED 24" LED Display

Hello all,

I just got myself a new Mac Mini yesterday. I connected it to my existing 24" LED Display. Prior to this, my display was connected my MacBook (2009) and I have never had any problems. Since yesterday (connected to my Mac Mini), my LED goes black from time to time (0.1 s randomly). There are quite a few theories about why it does this. Since I have never had this problem before, it seems to me that it maybe something to do with the new Thunderbolt port (on MAC mini) which is used for the display as well. In fact I have read an interesting article

I suspect the same problem is happening with the new MAC mini.

I am keen to see if there will be a firmware fix from Apple, on either the MAC mini or the Display.

I have just received my Altona miniDisplay port to DVI.

For anyone who suffers from this unacceptable issue which is incompatibility (or very bad calibrating) between an 24" LED Display (miniDisplay Port) and new Mac mini (Thunderbolt port), there is a solution, not cheap, not so clean, but it WORKS.

1. Connect mini Display port (from the LED Display) into a miniDisplay port to DVI adapter.

2. Connect the DVI to HDMI adapter (the one Apple provided kindly with your Mac Mini) in the miniDisplay port to DVI adapter

3. Connect the HDMI output into the Mac Mini HDMI port.

You can find adapter from Altona, Kanex.

Advantages:

  • Your Screen now works correctly.
  • Your Mac Mini thunderbolt port is now free to plug a Thunderbolt storage device. (if this works!)

Disadvantages:

$100 - 150 for the Adapter

Not very clean, but this can be hidden behind the desk.

ps: so far no flickering. I will report in a couple of days my experience.

I have exactly the same issue with my Macbook Pro 2011 with Thunderbolt port and Apple 24inch LED display.

There is NOTHING you can do to resolve this on your own. I tried for 2 months. Apple keeps telling me firmware fix is coming but I doubt it after months of waiting.

After much wrangling over the phone and Emails, Apple agreed to replace my 24 inch display with the new 27inch Thunderbolt display but I will have to wait 4-6 weeks due to its lack of availability.

My suggestion to you is to return the Mini if you can, if not, call the customer service. Don't accept their party line of "firmware fix is coming." It's been coming for months. Apple really dropped the ball on this one.

I agree, I do not expect a firmware anytime soon. I think Apple has let people down big time. I hope that some of the employees read these messages.

I think that I would have to wait for too long to get an exchange on my display. So I bought an adapter, and it all workds perfectly. I have had it for 48 hours, not a single blink!

This is an issue with the Mac Mini / MBP new line with Thunderbolt.

I sent my 24" Display to service with a detailed problem description. My display still has a couple of months warranty. I had not much hope that it would come back working any better. But I thought they maybe would change it to the 27", as this display apparently dont have the issue. When its much likely a firmware problem. I was right, they had changed the logic board, and they stated "tested ok"! When I hooked it up to the mini, black flickering the first minute...I will contact support monday and demand a new 27" display. If Apple have said a firmware update is coming for months, I dont think it ever would come...

Also have a new Mac Mini (only a few weeks old, i5 with 8 GB of RAM) and have been having display flickering as well. Sent one monitor back (getting a replacement) as it was flickering a lot more than the other one I'm using now (both ASUS P246). Downloaded 10.7.1 and haven't seen much change in the frequency for the better. One computer was hooked up HDMI -> HDMI with an Apple Cable and the other is mini display port -> HDMI via Belkin adapter and the actual monitor HDMI cable. Might have to switch both to DVI if this problem isn't fixed in the next two weeks.

Other than that, this Mac Mini runs flawlessly (with one exception that the safari home page preferences never stuck so that the last page(s) I was on came up, even after a restart). Believe that has been fixed in 10.7.1 as my home page opens no matter when I open up Safari.

@ Charles.

Do you have issues waking up the computer from sleep ? I've seen this reported by someone else in the forum centered on the MBP. I got a Kanex adapter, works well and has resolved the flicker issue but I was not able to wake up my computer once after prolong sleep. I had to reset the computer by pressing on power for 10 secs.So you trade a problem for another, not the perfect solution.

I had this problem, I.e. Not waking up from prolong sleep with my adapter. Mine is an Altona. There is a reset button on the Altona box. But recent,y I noticed that to wake up from sleep, I either have to wait for up to 10 seconds, or unplug and replug the hdmi. You don't need to reset the computer.

I have written to apple (a proper letter). A senior advisor is now on my case. My letter got some attention. I am taking data capture log for apple and their engineers. The advisor confirmed that many of us have the issue. So the good news is that they are paying attention.

In the meantime, some have spent 100 dollars or more to buy adapters, wasted hours on calls, or even returned some equipment. Not we will get some compensation for this.

Hope this helps ....

As you say, the black flickering is gone, this is not a perfect solution. However I prefer this solution than seeing flickering on my screen.

Ps: sorry for the typo, written from an iPad 2, with no flickering screen :)

Hey Charles,

I'm doing nearly exactly the same thing - I have their attention as well - but there's still some question as to whether my problem is unique (I can't believe that!)

Do you have a case number or anything for your case that I can piggyback on?

I'm on hold with an ultimatum at this point .. either I get a beta firmware, they upgrade me to a thunderbolt display, or this $4400 machine is going right back :/
