New Mac Mini with LED 24" LED Display

Hello all,

I just got myself a new Mac Mini yesterday. I connected it to my existing 24" LED Display. Prior to this, my display was connected my MacBook (2009) and I have never had any problems. Since yesterday (connected to my Mac Mini), my LED goes black from time to time (0.1 s randomly). There are quite a few theories about why it does this. Since I have never had this problem before, it seems to me that it maybe something to do with the new Thunderbolt port (on MAC mini) which is used for the display as well. In fact I have read an interesting article

I suspect the same problem is happening with the new MAC mini.

I am keen to see if there will be a firmware fix from Apple, on either the MAC mini or the Display.

Hey guys ...

I have had the same issue with my 24" Cinema Display since I purchased the Mac Mini recently. Last weekend I made an appointment for the Genius Bar and took my equipment into Apple at the Mall of America. We setup the equipment and immediately they saw the constant flicker issue. They tried several resolutions. Booting into Snow Leopard vs Lion. Wired network vs wireless network. Non bluetooth keyboard/mouse. It continued to flicker without fail. They decided to try a 27" Cinema Display. It worked. It continues to work. I left Apple with a new 27" Cinema Display. They did an even swap with the 24" Cinema Display. It is odd considering it is the exact same technology. I was impressed with their support on this issue. They are going to escalate this to engineering. Hopefully it will be resolved thru a firmware or other update.

Hey Thomas,

Was your 24" Cinema Display still on warranty or AppleCare? I'm just curious, as I'm going into the Genius bar Saturday wiht this same problem - but my 24" is a few months off warranty (didn't get applecare).

I'm just trying to set my expectations.... if I should expect to be walking out with a new 27" because everyone else is 😁

Thanks.

I bought the following setup a few days ago (both machines are running Lion 10.7.1). The MacMini is attached directly to an Apple Cinema Display 24" using Thunderbolt/MiniDisplayPort. The problems are exactly the same as described above.

MacMini 2,5 Ghz i5, 4GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6630M 256MB

MacBook Air 13,3", 1,7 Ghz i5, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Intel HD 3000

The display works absolutely fine being attached to the MacBook Air. I also read in a German forum that in some cases attaching the display to a single power socket instead of a multiple power socket fixes the problem. I tried it and it worked for a few days but one hour ago the problem occured again. I also changed the MacMini in an AppleStore but it didn't help.

]Crossing fingers for prompt firmware update.

Don't hold your breath. This firmware update has been "coming soon" since February. I'm having doubts it will ever come out - if it's been this long in beta testing (if it even is), it's likely there are some issues with it preventing release.

If they're not letting you in the beta program (which every apple employee is telling me doesn't exist), best to take your gear into apple and get stuff swapped out.

I have exactly the same problem, but here in the Apple Store in Paris, they claim to you that the firmware is coming, but F*** can't I wait i have to work and with no machines i'm SO deep in trouble.

I have a brand new Mac Mini 2,5, and the apple LED 24, which i bought in january 2010, and they certainly made me notice that the warranty was over... nice move Apple...

I am NOT LETTING THIS GO, i WANT my 27 inches, for compensation, it's been like 6 hours of my life i spent in the apple store in only a few days... grrrrhhhh

I don't understand, and i'm ready to pay the difference between the price of my LED 24 and the new 27, which is only like 200€.... but still, DO SOMETHING Apple !
