New Mac Mini with LED 24" LED Display

I paid just under £700 for my 24 inch monitor about 2 years ago and then they go and discontinue it. That's not really a problem to me, but what is a problem is when they do not give a sh** about providing compatiblity. Do they seriously expect us to be throwing away monitor every two years??? How green is that of Apple? So here I am with my 2011 MacBook Pro, that I bought so that I could use it with a thunderbolt raid (that I now own) and then I cannot have a stable display to play it through.

I have been angry angry angry since I bought my new Macbook and then I sense relief when this second fix is released after the first one did absolutely nothing except provide more frustration at a broken promise. Months pass and nothing happens except a more and more poor image of Apple forms in my head. It is a pretty accurate image of arrogance. Then this fix............AND THEN THEY PULL IT.

So now I have to download it from a dodgy site, because Apple pulls the fix and tells you that you have to carry on flickering.

While I love many Apple products, I really do hate Apple sometimes. They just do too much careless stuff to really say they care about customer comfort. Still everybody always looks happy on their website and their shopworkers clap you like loyal robots when you perform so well by buying.

The one in the mediafire link is the exact same thing that was downloaded from the apple.com download link earlier, but I totally agree that you probably shouldn't get in the habit of downloading stuff like this from places other than apple.com. I don't think that I would trust it either (well, I mean, I know for certain that the mediafire link is the exact same thing that was downloaded from Apple, but would I trust it if someone else said it? Probably not.)

No reason to not trust it if you ended up downloading it from apple.com, though. It works perfectly.

Then why did they pull it?? I will try installing it, but I am just flabbergasted with this 'pulling'. At the very least there could be a page in place saying that they will be placing it in the software update menu. Again it is arrogance. If it was the only time, I would understand, but it just bespeaks of a certain corporate attitude that contradicts the prosac pictures of happiness.

I'd bet a lot of money that this thing just hasn't gone through all the appropriate steps a release has to go through internally at Apple to be publically released, and a tech goofed by giving one of us knuckleheads the URL early.

It's not arrogance, it's probably just a premature release. At least we now all have proof it exists, so it's not like Apple isn't going to release this eventually, and probably soon.

I just spoke to a phone support person at Apple, and they told me that the updater only works in certain situations. If you have flicker with your 24 inch display and thunderbolt mac, you should just contact AppleCare.

I doubt that the file is malware, though I wouldn't be comfortable downloading it from some non-Apple website, either.

In case anybody cares to trust a complete stranger, here's the SHA1 sum of the file I got from the km.support.apple.com url last night (perhaps the original poster could confirm to corroborate this):

If what you download from anywhere else matches, it's almost assuredly safe (assuming you trust me).

I suspect that Apple has removed it because it's just not been properly tested. They won't want to prematurely release something if it could contain bugs that lead to more support issues.

I can confirm that it worked well for my 24" cinema display with a 13" early 2011 MBP. I haven't had any annoying flickering issues since installing it a day ago.

Downloaded yesterday the Firmware Update and applied it.

SUCCESS > macMini i5 Thunderbolt and 24" ACD

No more flickering with cold ACD 24" and after sleep mode.

Works perfect now.

Why Apple removed that fix after two days? Is it buggy?

I managed to download the dmg file from the third party website link that was provided earlier in this thread (before the link was removed!), it is sat on my desktop. I have opened it but as yet not installed it.

I have a 2011 27" iMac i7 3.4ghz that my 24" cinema display is hooked up to.... the blackouts are very unpredictable... sometimes it won't do it for days, but when it starts it keeps doing it every few minutes until restart.... very annoying.

the display was fine hooked up to my 2009 iMac, this is def a thunderbolt/cinema display conflict.

It was actually the question for Apple guys. I do have that update (I make it before they removed the links) and it works very well. So if you are so lucky to have it don't stop yourself before this jump.

ah ok... I think there's no way any Apple representative is going to reply to the query as to why it has been pulled.

it would seem that it was never an 'official' firmware/software update... so I guess they wouldn't see the reason to expain why it has been pulled.

In my opinion they thought that they gave it only to a small number of customers who have escalated their issues through Apple's support systems (maybe they insisted for change their ACD 24 to Thunderbolt Display for free). Either way if a small group of people can have it and it works for them, why the rest of us cannot be happy too.

2nd point is that before I shared the link on this forum I've requested the permission to do and I still have the email from apple's technical support. Thus I do not understant why it has been removed.

Before I got the update, I called Apple aound 10 times and told them I was really desapointed about the situation but did not request any exchange of my monitor. I told them I wanted to send back the mac mini and get my money back.
