This aspect of Safari 5.1 is really lame!

"Webpages are not responding. To visit the selected webpage, all webpages in other tabs and windows must be force reloaded. Do you want to visit this page?"

Maybe I have something misconfigured but I think I am going to be forced to revert to the last version of Safari. An error window with the above text is popping up too frequently and my general overall impression of new Safari is that it is weak. I am for the first time actually seriously considering installing Chrome to overcome issues of slowness with this latest version of Safari.

Just to note: This force reloading issue is particularly troubling when I have a paused YouTube video in another background window that is forced to reload. When it reloads that paused video starts over from the beginning and immediately begins to play.

This is stupid, hamfisted behavior. It doesn't make any sense for Safari to reload every single web page for what are ostensibly security reasons. Safari 5.1 interrupts my workflow because of this. It is no longer a reliable tool. At first I thought 5.1.1 was an improvement, but its just as sloppy as 5.1. If the next version (which Apple better release very soon) doesn't fix this I will move back to Firefox after not having used it for over 6 years.

You can download Safari 5.0.5 here. It tells you it cannot be installed on your machine, just ignore that.

Now extract Safari.app of this .pkg and Safari 5.0.5 will start. (I think Pacifist does a great job extracting files of .pkg's)

Safari 5.0.5 brings back all the familiar behaviours such as:

  • Single Cookie Deletion
  • Websites will never automatically reload :-)
  • It's fast
  • Tabs will not be grouped (On 5.1.* you have to use the Extension OpenAtEnd to restore this behaviour)
  • Closed tabs will restore right where they were (On 5.1.* you have to use the Extension Right Exit to restore the behaviour)

Hope this helps.

I have notice it not just for the 'Force Reload' but also that tabs I open sometimes aren't loaded yet. I use my laptop on the train and open tons of tabs and read them later, but new Safari has burned me a couple times with tabs that normally would be loaded but are in some weird partially loaded state.

Also, I've gotten the 'Force Reload' error without an internet connection while on the train. Lost all the pages I wanted to read for the whole trip. Awesome.

I agree, using Safari after this "upgrage" has complete DOWNGRADED my 1 year old $4,000 (with a super fast solid state drive) MABOOK PRO! It acts like a REGULAR Piece of @#$% windows machine garbage... it crashed several times a day! I CAN"T WORK ON IT! Especially with yahoo mail! FIX THIS! STOP MAKING EVERY **** PAGE RELOAD JUST BECAUSE ONE STUPID PAGE GETS WEIRD! IT"S RUINING MY COMPUTER!!!!

Hey guys, I found an even better solution.

I didn't want to install Chrome because Google has a horrifyingly evil update mechanism which sh*ts all over the hard drive, and they ather statistics for world domination, but I found an alternative called SRWare Iron!

It's basicaly Chrome with the evil stripped out.

The only major downide is no click2plugin

PS: But it does have a selective flash blocker like the original click2flash (not as cool as click2plugin, but maybe the author could be pursuaded to do a port?)

The nice thing about going back to Safari 5.05 would be not only eliminating this "force all webpages to reload" issue but ALSO going back to a SANE version of autofill that WORKED and didn't add two extra steps. I'd love to know who thought that one up.... "Hey! I have an idea! Instead of having the form just fill when they start typing like before, let's ask them TWICE to select whether they want to autofill and which address book to use, even though most people only have one address! Let's not even give them a chance to choose a preference to turn this behavior off!"

That was driving me crazy, but when the "force all webpages to reload" started happening it sealed the deal for me. I'm going back.

Safari 5.1.1 resulted in no improvement whatsoever in this problem. If anything, it's worse. This single bug has made Safari 5.1.1 completely unusuable to me; not only am I bombarded with the error messages, but the reloads are incredibly slow. My machines spend a huge amount of time in beachball mode when I use Safari 5.1.1. Apple should fix this in the short run by downgrading everyone to the last usable version of Safari until they have time to tear Safari 5.1.1 down and rebuild it from scratch.

This is really a problem. Safari is almost unsuable and Apple is not responding with a fix.

Now that Apple is the 800lb gorrilla, does it not have to respond to it's customers? Steve would not approve.

I've downgraded to Safari 5.0.5 and it is a breath of fresh air! Wow, things work like they should.

So, could someone tell us how to voice our displeasure and criticisms to Apple?

There is really NO EXCUSE FOR THIS KIND OF LOUSY SOFTWARE!

let us know how it goes. I for one am so used to having a functional web browser (Firefox) for the past month or so that im afraid of what getting back on the hooch (Safari) will do to me.

This aspect of Safari 5.1 is really lame!
