Documents, system files, .zip and .rar files, swap space - basically, anything that doesn't fall into any of the named categories.

In my view, this way of presenting hard disk usage isn't very good for a desktop. It's based on the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch approach, where video.audio/phto content is primary. But a desktop user might well be using a mich greater variety fo file types.

User uploaded fileHelp! 93gb are under the file of "core". And I have no idea why my storage increases DAILY. I just cleared up about 4gb by deleting a movie;then all of a sudden 2gb of the 4 gb I cleared up was gone! This has been happening for a week and I am extremely frustrated because eventually all the space will be occupied by "others" and I will have nothing left in my mac!

I have 406 GB of 'other' on my 500 GB hard drive! And I have no idea what it is so I don't know what to do to increase my storage...I just bought a 4 TB external drive to store my photos and videos (totalling about 400 GB) to free up the drive on my computer and it is nearly full again with 'other'. Any suggestions as to how to determine what is under the 'other' category? I can't imagine that files under 'other' are files I need?
