what is classed as 'other' on lion about this mac storage? 37GB of my 250GB hard drive is taken up by 'other'? Any help so i can clear it out would be great! thanks!

Documents, system files, .zip and .rar files, swap space - basically, anything that doesn't fall into any of the named categories.
In my view, this way of presenting hard disk usage isn't very good for a desktop. It's based on the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch approach, where video.audio/phto content is primary. But a desktop user might well be using a mich greater variety fo file types.

Help! 93gb are under the file of "core". And I have no idea why my storage increases DAILY. I just cleared up about 4gb by deleting a movie;then all of a sudden 2gb of the 4 gb I cleared up was gone!This has been happening for a week and I am extremely frustrated because eventually all the space will be occupied by "others" and I will have nothing left in my mac!
/cores is where an App "dumps" it's core on a crash (see: http://krypted.com/mac-security/core-dumps-in-mac-os-x/.)
Although it is possible to disable the core dumps, try to determine what App is causing the dumps. Check the Crash Log in Console (Applications/Utilities)
You can safely delete all the files in /cores.
So it is safe to delete everything in core and my computer wont crash?
Yes, as I said: You can safely delete all the files in /cores.
(Leave the directory /cores, just delete all the files in there).
But, if they keep coming back, you'll need to find out which on of your Apps is creating the dumps.

You can see it in Finder by: ⇧⌘G, then enter: /cores (you can also delete from here)

I have 406 GB of 'other' on my 500 GB hard drive! And I have no idea what it is so I don't know what to do to increase my storage...I just bought a 4 TB external drive to store my photos and videos (totalling about 400 GB) to free up the drive on my computer and it is nearly full again with 'other'. Any suggestions as to how to determine what is under the 'other' category? I can't imagine that files under 'other' are files I need?

I downloaded OmniDiskSweeper as recommended in earlier discussions but this app requires OSX 10.8 or later and I have OSX 10.7.5. Any other suggestions?

I have had my mac for half a year and other was taking up 200 gig on my mac. So I tryed clearing my trash and there goes 150 gig back just like that😁

Yes, I did clear my trash and that helped tremendously...went from 406 GB of "other" down to about 65 GB...and it took 2 days to clear my trash..over 250,000 items! I would still like to know what other storage items are categorized under "other" because it still is 65 GB after emptying trash.

Hello, I am also having storage issues on my MacBook Pro. I tried to spot what to delete with OmniDiskSweeper but I got to some files I have no idea what they are. Does any one knows what is that "som" folder under "library" and if it is safe to delete straight from Omni? Thank you so much!
