Last night I installed Safari 5.1 on my MBP running 10.6.8 and am now unable to view pdf files from Google searches. Clicking on a pdf in Google the window does dark, there is a QuickTime icon and the page seems to download. When it finishes, the QT icon is replaced by the front page of the document but I am unable to scroll down to see more. In some instances the QT icon disappears and nothing loads.
Any ideas?

I have exactly the same PDF/Quicktime problem with a five-year-old iMac and will wait to see if anyone has an answer.
I'm having the same problem. Every .pdf file I've tried to open. Safari thinks it's a Quicktime file.
Just another observation: this isn't restricted to Safari - it also happens with Firefox. Looks like it's more to do with the QT plug-in than the browser.
Me too. Firefox also thinks a PDF is a QuickTime file.
Finally, from an older thread, I learned that if I hold the "option" key down while clicking on a Safari link to a PDF, the PDF gets sent to my "downloads" folder and can easily be opened there, but I still cannot open PDFs within the browser, either Safari or Firefox.
I visited a "genius" in the Apple Store, Leicester, this morning. After some playing around he seems to have sorted it. Apparently - now they tell me! - you don't need Adobe Reader on Macs as the Mac has its own pdf reader built-in. Safari 5.1 is now clashing with Reader and the best approach is to remove Reader - and the relevent preference files. I took one of my MBPs into the store and am just checking it out to see if everything is now ok. I'm now planning to make the changes on my other machine and will report back. (The genius said that my best approach was to bring in the second MBP but I'm not very convenient to Leicester so I'm going to give it whirl myself.)

But why did we load Reader in the first place? Are we that unusual in the Mac community? Surely, others must have done the same and are having the same problem with Safari 5.1???
I have an acrobat reader and there's no issue. I'm having little issues with s 5.1 too but it looks like a lot of you are having bigger issues that me 🙂
I removed Adobe Reader 8 using AppZapper, got rid of a lot of files and folders associated with Adobe, but still, I can't open PDF files in the new Safari.
Also, I can't get the "Customize toolbar" window to open, this on two different macs.
You might want to download the Schubert-it PDF plugin and install it. You would also need to remove the Adobe PDF plugin and leave the Schuber-it plug in its place.
It has been updated to work with Snow Leopard and works fine with my copy of Safari 5.1. It is a superior PDF reader plugin by far!

Just to finish this. I essentially deleted everything associated with Adobe Reader from my applications / preferences files etc (I have Photoshop Elements so I had to be a bit careful). I deleted Apple QT plists and Safari plist and QT prefs. Also reloaded Safari 5.1 on top of the earlier version. Everything now works and I've no intention to go back to using Reader. PDFs on the system open in Preview which looks just as good as Reader. You can still export pages documents etc as pdfs - which open in Preview.
I was inclined to globally delete all Adobe stuff and reload PSE but decided against it.

This is not a correct answer! Safari, until version 5.1, was always capable of showing PDF's in an iframe on a webpage. An install of Adobe Reader was not even necessary.
So @Captnpetee: please stop posting about Adobe Reader and compatibilty issues. Safari is the problem!
@Gogoathome Really? So it's Lions fault that Quicken 2007 doesn't work.
