What is up with iWork install DVD's?

First one, bad, gave install error at 98%. Drive could not read past that point. Tried twice, failed both times, scanned disk and it failed to even get through the scan. Took it out and noticed deep scratch on outer edge. Exchanged for new iWork, took it home (mistake) and immediately opened and observed two dimples in reflective layer on the outer edge. Tried install same results. See for yourself -

So, am I that unlucky? I've never had trouble with any Apple software. Anyone else finding it hard to get a good disc?

Same here, @98% of "Writing Files" statement of "There were errors installing the software - Please Try Again", which I did three times. After 2nd. try I ran a diagnostic (TechTool Deluxe) which gave me a clean read. Then tried to call AppleCare which is closed for the night. Will now try some of the suggesstions posted.

I'm batting .500. But, I bought the Family Pack of both iWork and iLife so I will try the iWork trial version disk included with iLife. Hopefully that will work. If you didn't buy iLife with iWork then the only option is to try the dmg solution. If you don't have a DVD burner the game is pretty much over. Apple must issue a fix to this problem. Probably send out a whole new boatload of iWork DVDs. Ouch, there goes Apple's profit towards shipping costs.

I don't know but maybe there is an online Software Update possibility if you have 98% of the installation complete. Apple must have thought of the possibility of this occuring ... maybe due to bad media or whatever problems with installation ... so they have to be planning on going to their Plan B ... whatever that is?

Same problem here. The DVD installed without a problem on the first try on a snowball iMac 800 G4, but on a dual 2 GHz G5, the DVD drive stalled out at 98% and kept started and stalling until it failed at 98%, then on a second try it stalled and failed at 97%, then I ran Disk Utility and rebooted the computer, and tried again. It stalled at 98%, hesitated, the DVD drive tried to start up several times, then it finally re-started and completed the installation. There are no visible flaws on the DVD. Both computers are running 10.4.4.

I have never had an Apple product installation problem like this in over 12 years of Mac ownership.

I used the Demo dvd on all my machines since I got iLife first, then I put in my serial number when I got the iWork box.

I then got a chance to put my copy of iWork on my dad's Powerbook running a freshly installed copy of 10.4.3 (and the upgrade to 10.4.4 minutes later). That's the ONLY thing on it. The iWork install went fine. This was the retail DVD right out of the box on its first use.

So I guess not all discs are bad, OR they only work on certain drives correctly.

well, I'm back. After three disc exchanges and no luck I took my new computer (running 10.4.3 by the way) in to the genius bar. of course the disc installed just fine on the store computers, but not on mine. we installed a fresh 10.4.4 right there and still no luck. Guess who got a new imac? me. and we tested the disc right there no problem. The drive in the old one was a pioneer. New one is Matshita DVD-R UJ-846. A little noisier but works fine. I'm baffled still but whatever. At least it works now. BTW, a copy was not possible with the previous one because the superdrive refused to read all the way through the discs no matter what program was used to read it. virtually unrippable. I think the pioneer drives may have a problem with 1.7 gb dvd's.
