usb not working after lion upgrade

Hello all,

I have a MBA: 121.33GB, 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHZ DDR3. I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediatly after the upgrade the USB ports are not working. I have a USB ethernet dongle that I use to connect at work, and have been unable to do so. A couple things that I have tried so far:

-removing/adding the device

-adding a new location

-resetting the PRAM

I have had limited success by running ifconfig en3 down && ifconfig en3 up . After this I can ping out to other machines on the network after this, but cannt bind to AD. Also the GUI still says that I have no ip, though ifconfig says otherwise.

Any thoughts?

Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Note
: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Try doing this, it may reset the SMC and might help your USB problem.

Thanks John. Tried both your option and Eli's 3 2 thing, neither has worked. I checked system information with my cheap chinese ebook reader attached via usb and it appears there, just no little hard disk pic on my desktop, nothing in devices in Finder. I am seriously hacked off with Apple, how stupid can they be that they didn't spot this, or at least give a warning, or even be announcing they are fixing this?!?

This bug has got me too.

My iMac keeps giving me an error message saying that my hard drive was improply disconected. For me it only happens when my computer sleeps. This never happened before Lion 10.7. Also, I tried unchecking "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" in the Energy Saver system preference. No help.

I've contacted Apple Express Lane support, and while very kind and thorough, they have no idea what's going on.

I just spoke to Apple about this because I had tried all of the solutions posted here, and more, but to no avail

After exhausting their standard routes on the help line with no success they put me through to a senior techy who said to me that the USB ethernet dongle IS NOT SUPPORTED under Lion. So, he said, the only solution is to for me is to retrograde back to snow leopard. I explained to him that this was not satisfactory to me because many hotels in Europe only have ethernet in the rooms and also that my office they don't give full access to the network via wi-fi presumably for security reasons ... his solution was to for me to get an airport express ... i guess I'll try it but doubt that the network will like it

I intimated to him several times that this was an unnecessary and painful constraint and that I was therefore an unhappy customer ... but did not get the impression he would do anything with the feedback. Maybe with Steve Jobs retiring they'll develop a more feedback rich culture at Apple !

So, to recap. I have a cheap ebook reader which is probably 32-bit and connects to my Macbook Pro via usb. Before upgrading to OS Lion everything worked fine. Now (presumably because of Lion being 64-bit) I cannot communicate with the reader. So far the suggestions have been to hold 3 and 2 down while powering and to reset the SMC, neither of which have worked. Does anyone out there have any further suggestions? I have seen advice on similar problems that I should wait until these bugs are fixed by Apple, is that the best option?

Hi. I'm having the same problem with pen drive recognition after Lion OS upgrade. Also sometimes it doesn't see my usb 3G modem. I've found two solutions. First and best is to split your hard disk into two with Disk Utility, then install 10.6.x on the second volume. Another one is more complicated. You install virtual mashine (Virtual Box), then you install Windows on that, then in Windows VM properties you choose to connect your particular usb device to this VM. You start the VM, then connect your device and it hopefully does recognize your usb-device. You disconnect the device from VM (you don't need to stop VM for that), after which the device is transfered automatically back to Mac and at this stage, I believe, purblind lion smells it, then finally sees.

So what now? I have a macbook with a usb hub that always disconnects for about two months so far. I waited for the 10.7.1 update. NOTHING HAPPENED. I reset the PRAM. NOTHING HAPPENED. I reset SMC. NOTHING HAPPENED. I reinstalled iTunes. NOTHING HAPPENED. I waited the 10.7.2 update. NOTHING HAPPENED. I can say that after 10.7.2 update, things got worse.

In Apple they just don't care about that problem. I don't care about the thunderbolt ports and updates and i don't care about iCloud backups. I just want my usb port to work properly. I CANNOT WORK LIKE THAT. I didn't pay 1200 euros to have a problematic laptop. I paid those money just to escape from the Microsoft's problems. And here we go again with Lion. Apple used to joke with Vista problems. Right now, Apple has to joke herself for the Lion.

I sense the frustration and have been through it myself! The only fix for this is to re-install Lion .. I got to this after an hour on the phone with Apple. It's actually not a painful exercise as all your files and settings are not harmed by the reinstallation. Make sure you do a back up first to be sure. I did this and the problem with the Dongle went away. What caused it I will never know. I would have saved myself alot of time and frustration if I'd done this in the first place ! So do it and enjoy a beer / glass of wine whilst it's happening

I had the same problem: I have a MacBook Air 2010 and an official Apple USB Ethernet dongle. After upgrading to Lion it refused to work. What worked for me was to remove the USB ethernet in System Preferences -> Network. Now, plug in the adapter and a network cable and then to execute the following commands in a terminal (Application -> utilities -> terminal):

sudo ifconfig

sudo ifconfig en3 down

sudo ifconfig en3 up

The en3 might be different for you (e.g. en2). The first command is used to see which one applies to you. Usually, the last entry in the list is the correct one for your dongle/adapter. The second and third command bring the network interface up and down. After that I could add the USB Ethernet connection again in System Preferences -> Network by clicking on the + sign.

When I now connect the dongle, it takes about 5 seconds to be configured but it is working again.

This description is based on the solution here given here:

I hope this will help you as well.
