usb not working after lion upgrade

Hello all,

I have a MBA: 121.33GB, 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHZ DDR3. I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediatly after the upgrade the USB ports are not working. I have a USB ethernet dongle that I use to connect at work, and have been unable to do so. A couple things that I have tried so far:

-removing/adding the device

-adding a new location

-resetting the PRAM

I have had limited success by running ifconfig en3 down && ifconfig en3 up . After this I can ping out to other machines on the network after this, but cannt bind to AD. Also the GUI still says that I have no ip, though ifconfig says otherwise.

Any thoughts?

Doesn't work for me! I did it, but it just don't work for me. My MacBook Pro can not recognize any of my USB storage disks (some are recognized but after a lot of effort) but works perfectly when I plug in my Microsoft's USB optical mouse.

Can anybody tell me the exact steps for ruud's solution. I know that it is not a hardware's problem but a software/firmware problem. DOES ANYBODY HEAR AT APPLE?

Hi LabMan11 and dmv501,

the solution I described is only intended to work for a USB device that gives me internet on my macbook air (internet dongle for USB to RJ45 socket fixed internet line). It is not related to any storage devices like hard drives, usb keys, etc. So from that perspective I cannot help you out further.

Looking up your problem in google is my usual way to start and that got me to the solution I described before for the internet problem.

Good luck!

I also had a problem with my Macbook Air 11" running Lion OS 10.7.3 not recognizing a Vodafone USB stick (3G modem dongle from Vodafone India). I connected the USB stick on my Macbook Pro and it recognized the drive without any problems. But for some reason I would connect it to the Macbook air and nothing would happen. I couldn't see it or access it in the Finder.

I was able to get it working by loading the installation software onto another USB stick and loading it on my Air. Once I had the software installed, I was able to use the 3G dongle through the Vodaphone app installed. But I still could not see it in the finder. So it is working, but not viewable in the finder.

I hope this helps someone else with the same problem.

Turned out that when I upgraded to 10.6.8 some of my preferences changed or dropped out. So when I plugged in anything to either of my USB ports, no icons showed up on my desktop.

I went to Finder, went to Preferences, went to General and checked the boxes for 'Show these items on desktop' and they were back!

Apparently this is a common issue with upgrading the OS.

Dunno if this helps - I hope it does.

Since this thread is slowly turning into a compendium of USB devices which no long work under Mountain Lion, I thought I'd toss in one more... and hope it stings someone with a sense of irony in AppleLand:

My Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500M scanner, BOUGHT FROM THE APPLE STORE and still referenced on their catalog of accessories for sale, only works on my MacBook Air when running Windows under VMware Fusion. The instant I plug in the USB cable a Windows popup appears telling me the scanner's ready to go. Thanks to Ruud for the suggestion. Unfortunately, unlike the case for Ruud's device, OSX still doesn't see the Fujitsu scanner, either during the Windows session of after closing it down.

I'm not even going to bother calling the tech support... I'll wait a few months and see. APPLE, fix your product, please!
