Is it set in the mouse preferences?
Dunno you can use four fingers in magic trackpad in system preferences is a tracpad, mouse and universal access panes where you can custom gestures if something cant be done is because apple think is beetter that we
It works if I change to using two fingers, but then I can't switch between fullscreen apps.
The two-finger swipe on my MacBook Pro trackpad doesn't work in Finder either, and it's enabled in the settings.
PLAY AROUND AND FIND WHAT BEST WORK FOR YOU..
I have tried different settings, but it won't work…
I found a solution: hold down the alt/option key as you swipe, it works in both Finder and Firefox.
As you swipe with two fingers, single finger doesn't work with the option key either (at least for me)
I am having the same problem. Only two finger swipe works. If I have full screen apps enabled in system preferences, then I can not single finger swipe in chrome or finder. Very frustrating.
Yes, one-finger-swipe work in Firefox while pressing the alt/option key (however without the cool animation as in Safari). In Finder you have to use two fingers.
I hope that this will be fixed in a coming update…
one finger used to work in the appstore and itunes too.. doesnt now in Lion
i have been playing with the sys prefs and even tried wit the option of 'swipe with one or two fingers' the little video even shows one finger.. now in the appstore and itunes two fingers move back and forth pages, but never one finger.. and i am so used to using only one
The hold alt thing works - but the answer to why is because single finger swiping seems to now be reserved for navigating through multiples of the same type of document. To see what I mean switch a folder's view to 'arrange by type' - you will see all your files organised into different horizontal rows, each according to their kind. These rows will then scroll left or right in response to single finder swiping, in a way akin to album artwork in itunes.
On balance I'd probably rather have the forward-back swipe, or at least the choice of behaviours.
The configuration options Apple have provided especially of the mouse is truly pathetic. If you want to be able to assign far more gestures and actions then take a look at this little app I came across recently and it is free.
Good find - and respect to the developers of this app. This really ought to be what the native preference pane does! Fingers crossed for an update. (though I'm not sure how my mouse would interpret that gesture!)
I very much doubt Apple will do it for the mouse as they want everyone to use a trackpad which if you are doing precision work such as graphics is a complete no no. Personally I can't stand trackpads I can work so much quicker using a mouse.
