Airplay issues in iTunes 10.4

Hi

Just about to purchase Lion but still running Snow Leopard. Upgraded iTunes yesterday though to 10.4.

Problem is this. I've got my 1st Gen Apple TV (connected to surround sound) and an Airport Express (connected to speakers) in another room hooked up via Airplay - or at least I did have!

Now, when I attempt to 'tick' to add these two speakers to the Airplay icon in iTunes it blinks (milli-seconds) as though it's trying to add but then doesn't on either ATV or AE. These worked beautifully before I updated iTunes. Is this a known issue? Would it be rectified (knowing the 10.4 update is geared towards Lion) once I have updated to Lion?

It's a pain in the rear so if anyone can help I'd appreciate. I've not really seen same on here so I guess it's just me?!? 😟

I thought I had a problem with my airplay and I thought it was either Lion or itunes 10.4. If I take my iMac and unplug the ethernet and use wireless network it works perfectly. My IPAD 2 worked flawlessly because it was on the wireless network. Airplay works fine, I now need to figure out what setting is wrong with my wired network.

No issues.

I am also having this issue and am very frustrated by this. I am new to Airport and had high hopes :/

Although my Macbook Air can recognize the AE network is setup and working (i'm using the internet connection from it to type this post), and my iPhone CAN airplay to the system, iTunes 10.4 CANNOT. It is being very dumb - it recognizes the airport location but when I attempt to use it to stream music to my speakers connected to the AE, the computer tries for a while and then spits out:

An unknown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device “HOWARD T CAROLAN's AirPort Express”.

Simple setup: I'm connecting from my Comcast modem via ethernet cable to an Airport Express (newest model). Then from there just using AE to create a network and attempt to run this all off it. I have a more complicated structure I'm envisioning featuring more AEs but I need to first get one to work!

Thanks for any help or input everyone...

I'm back again.

No sooner had I thought the problem had gone....

I'm now getting the seemingly familiar ' An unknown error occurred (-15006). Therefore I cannot connect in iTunes to either my Apple TV (1st Gen) or Airport Express (with attached speakers).

This is an intermittant problem which I can resolve temporarily by restarting my Mac. It'll last for a few days before the iTunes logo bounces up and down at the bottom of my screen telling me something is wrong!

This has all happened since I switched to Lion. When clicking the Airplay logo in itunes it can clearly see both ATV and AE but when trying to tick the boxes it momentarily tries to connect before coming up with this error.

What browns me off most is the absolute deafening silence from Apple. Clearly there are issues which need addressing with an update. Shouldn't they be rushing this out. It is clearly a big issue!! C'mon Apple. I love you lots but grow a pair and sort this out...

I just got a brand new Mac Mini with Lion and experienced the same problem. It turned out that disabling IPv6 did the trick. However, this option has dissappeared from the System Preferences -> Network -> [active interface] -> Advanced -> TCP/IP tab. Apparently "Link local only" is not the same as turning it off completely. To test whether this helps, do the following: Open up terminal and type

sudo ip6 -x

(provide the root pwd if requested)

This disables IPv6 completely on all interfaces and I could immediately play through the remote speakers. Interestingly, it turned out that while streaming a song enabling IPv6 back again, stopped playback immediately.

I think this offers a good workaround while Apple works on this. I am not sure whether this setting is persistent accross reboots, probably not.

That approach fixed it for about 5 minutes, and then it totally dropped out again. I know the issue has nothing to do with distance / connectivity because every other device I own will have full strength within my area (including apple devices).

The workaround you proposed (which again actually did allow me to run music to two AEs at once with Itunes/Airplay) lets me know that this is a software bug and not a hardware glitch, at least it seems that way. This is encouraging. However, the workaround itself is much too cumbersome to be anything close to a permanent solution, especially for Apple gear. Come on guys, this is way below you. If I wanted to restart all of the hardware in my house and then fool around in a terminal window just to play some music, I'd get a PC. As it stands, this isn't worth it. Very close to returning my AEs and telling others to go with Sonos, which I've had great experiences with (however is a bit pricier per room).

thats because you need to disable IPv6 permanently.

To do this, open a terminal window

type sudo vi /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

enter your password for your user account (if you dont use one, create one temporarily using User Accounts in System Preferences)

Find the <key>IPv6</key> and press :i (to insert in vim) and replace <string>whatever is here</string> with <string>__INACTIVE__</string> as shown below. (btw thats 2 _ before inactive and 2 _ after)

<key>IPv6</key>

<dict>

<key>ConfigMethod</key>

<string>__INACTIVE__</string>

</dict>

press :w to write the file then :q to quit vim editor

next exit terminal or just simply reboot your system.

Once rebooted check in System Preferences > Network > Airport/Ethernet > IPv6 should read OFF

Thanks to Alex Gherman for this one.

Thanks for the suggestion and I think I am almost there - need a bit more help to bring it over the top here - I was able to find a program called TextWrangler to help me edit this plist file as it is much more user friendly than just working in the terminal.

However, there are several different sections of that file with the text as below:

<key>IPv6</key>

<dict>

<key>ConfigMethod</key>

<string> **whatever i insert here** </string>

</dict>

So my question is, do I change them all - it seems like it refers to settings for multiple different apps (i.e. AppleTalk, etc.)

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your time and for getting me nearer to having this up and running...
