"Remove attachments" in Mail (Lion) is disabled and I cant remove the files from the emails I have sent. it worked fine before I switched to Lion and kept my Mail folder in Libary small. Anybody else having this problem?

iBiD created a rule in order to mark send emails as read which made paperclips re-appear and finally I am able to remove attachments from my sent mail! 🙂

Excellent, switching back to the classic layout of Mail in the settings helps! The paperclips re-appear and I can remove the attachments. You can switch back to the new design afterwards.
Recently discovered the BCC trick does not do the job: indeed it is possible to remove the paperclip in the incoming mail but the size of the mail does not get smaller!
Better solutions for the problem are offered above.

im having the same issues, have tried these options and thought it had worked but for some reason my mail has created a RECOVERED messages mailbox and keeps the email as new then makes duplicates?????
any help in this would be great

I found the exact some solution, when trying to remove sent attachments.
The work around that mention "Mark as Sent" don't seem to make much difference. Has anyone found a better solution?
The only thing that has worked for me (and solved the problem) is the one with creating the rule and then clicking on "Apply rules" to the messages sent. This brings back the paperclip for all messages with attachments and allows to use "Remove attachments".

Ah, made it work. Strange that it doesn't work when you do the same thing manually. Thanks anyway.
What's working for me in a somewhat exceptable form is, sent - highlite mesg - hit reply to all - new copy will appear minus the attachment - type in title of attachment - hit red delete dot - save (will go to drafts) - delete original in sent folder.
In case anyone was wondering, this issue is not resolved in 10.8.3. Apple bugreporter lists the issue as a duplicate.
I guess we wait for 10.8.4...

Whoops – after two days #2 works again. Fixed itself, I didn't do anything.
It seems that the solution (#2) to move the message between mailboxes is a bit stochastic. Sometimes it's sufficient to move the message from my ordinary IMAP sent box to my iCloud sent box, but sometimes I have to keep moving the message around for a while to make the "Remove attachments" option become selectable, between different IMAP boxes and local boxes. Sometimes it's enough to wait for a while without moving the message around. I can't really see the general rule here. Very strange. Apple, wake up.
OK, There is an update available today: this update addresses the sent mail issues: you can delete attachments from sent mail, the same way you would do for mails in inbox. Thanks Apple!!!
This update is part of the iTunes, iBooks & Mail as a package.
The update works for me too. Not a year too early.
