Lion and Keynote Problems

I live in iWorks and have a VERY large Keynote presentation with lots of movies (1.1Gb) that I work off of. It worked great in SL, but after upgrading to Lion, I continually get the rotating ball of death loading Keynote, random times working in Keynote, and saving the presentation. It will eventually, after minutes, clear the ball but this is ridiculous. Any ideas?

I downloaded the patch a few days ago and since then have tried and tested it. Pleased to say that it seems to have worked. You may notice that due to the auto-save function that closing a file or making a major video change is perhaps not a slick as it was but I think that as long as you have your final presentation ready the night before you present then it should be no problem and it will give you peace of mind. I may look at some of the preferences to see if I can get it a little slicker. Interestingly the Apple iWork team actually e mailed me for some disgnosis after I posted a recent message, pleased to have that contact. Thanks Apple for finally looking at this issue.

I was hesitant to undo the "downgrade", since it was working OK. But, based on the experiences here, I gave it a shot, and I can also report succcess with the 5.1.1 update. I have opened and worked with several presentations (file sizes 300-500MB) that were unusable with 5.1, and they all seem fine with 5.1.1 - no delays, spinning beachballs, etc.

I'd like to give a few props to the participants of this discussion thread. A workable "fix" was found (thanks fuzzydog!) and helpfully summarized several times along the way, useful information was exchanged, and given the frustrations and the seriousness of the problem, there was a minimum of the melodrama that sometimes characterizes these long discussion threads. And now people are even taking the time to report back on things working properly. This was a support discussion thread as it should be. Nice job people. 😀

what now?

First thing you could do is share a bit more information about your Keynote document(s).

Is this just one file, or all files? Is this a very large file, are there movies embedded? What OS are you running, and is the OS updated to the current version? Are all other Software Update updates updated? ::grin::

This info should help track down your issue.

Ciao. Joel.

Other updates might be related to Perian, VLC, Flip4Mac. I'd check those too. I know there have been several updates for these since Lion's arrival.

How old are the videos? Do they play in QuickTime? Do they play in quick look? Can you re-render them in a modern format, or from a modern application?

I did have several videos when I first updated to Lion that wouldn't play in quick look mode in the Finder. Although they were not in Keynote documents, I'd think those would be more likely to cause problems in Keynote.

Best wishes. Joel.

Update 5.1.1 does not work for me. Never ending beach ball, hangs and freezes are still a major problem. Nothing has changed.

iMac 27", 12GB mem, ALL software up to date. Keynote file size 4.7GB.

I followed Fuzzydog's post instructions and reverted back to v. 5.0.5 (thanks Fuzzydog). Keynote worked like a charm, not a single issue.

I then decided to take another shot at updating to 5.1.1. Following update, I ran permissions, unchecked "Back up previous version"and checked "Save new documents as packages" in Keynote sys pref. Also hand-copied the keynote file to a new file.

None of this made any difference, my keynote file is simply still impossible to work with.

Back to 5.0.5...one more time!

My sincere thanks to all of you for sharing your thoughts and experiences.

Having the same nightmare....at 40,000 feet with only a bit of battery left.

Lion's new autosave is HORRIBLE, another example of infantilizing users. I'm perfecty capable of managing versions and want to give them names I understand. I have a 2.5GB Keynote file and want to remove some big movies inside it. But apparently the geniuses who created Lion want to back up every keystroke so there's no way to jettison anything.

I have to give a major presentation and need to get this cancerous Lion OS off my computer as soon as I land.

Apple: Wake up. Some users actually have brains. It's ok to give them just a bit of control over their lives.
