Time machine no longer working

i upgraded my MacBook Air to Lion and since then I have been unable to back up properly. I restored time capsule to factory settings, and it appears in finder as though I am connected however whenever I try to connect through time machine to the disc to back up I get a -6584 error message which I can't find any details of. Any help/advice gratefully received.

Did you try Resetting your TC? (per http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728)?

If you have AppleCare, give them a call.

If not, you can still call them, but they'll charge you ($50 U.S., I think).

If you do get a resolution, PLEASE post back for the benefit of the others. 🙂

If you have an external HD, you might want to back up to it temporarily. If not, consider getting one; once this is sorted out, you can use it for "secondary" backups. See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some suggestions.

Hi,

In my opinion, it has nothing to do with working on the TC. It seems to be a Lion problem as it happened yesterday in my case.

1.

Fresh installed Lion on a MBP1 (Macbook Pro #1). Migrated the files from a Snow Leopard MBP2 (Macbook Pro #2). Error 6584 when trying to access TC for the first time from MBP1.

2.

Upgraded MBP2 with Lion. No problem accessing TC.

3.

Fresh installed Lion on MBP2. Migrated files from Lion MBP1 from 1 above, which could not access TC. No problem accessing TC from MBP1.

Could you try to access the TC with a different user? Perhaps creating a new Admin user and try to access the TC?

Good luck!

Greetings. Error 6584 with my Time Machine. Would you be kind to help with this error, please. I know your website but so far i wasn't able to solve my issue. Before i had this issue i deleted my sparse bundle back up from my Time Capsule. I didn't follow exactly your advice. I just deleted because i want to make more space for new back up. Now i know how to do this properly. Your support with this error will be highly appreciated. If you can do this step by step i guess i will be able to make it.

Sorry, but I don't have a fix. 😟

Whatever this is, seems to affect a few folks running Lion only. A couple of them seem to say they can back up if they do a Back Up Now from the TM icon.

If you haven't yet, try a "full reset" per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

If that doesn't help, try repairing your backups, per #A5 there.

Otherwise, about all I can suggest is to be sure your Time Capsule and Airport Utility have the latest updates, and search the forum for 6584 to see if a solution is found.

I had this same error and tried to connect to the Time Capsule from the Finder to see if I could get to the files that way. It prompted me for the password, which I thought was odd, because I had already done that from with the Time Machine preferences. So, on a whim, I decided to try the TC Restore again after entering the password and saving it to the keychain in the Finder. It seemed to work fine at that point.

I think the moral of the story may be that Finder needs the password also?

I had a had drive crash last month (a week after upgrading to Lion) and now it appears that my entire backups on Time Capsule have been corrupted. I am not sure if this was caused ny Lion, but the coincidence is too hard to ignore. My backups under Lion were looking normal until my MacBook HD crash.

I am getting all the errors mentioned in this thread. Someone at Apple Support suggested I use the Disk Utility to repair the TC, so I did it.

Then I came across this Apple article H4522 that says:

"Important: Do not use Disk Utility to erase, verify, or repair a Time Capsule disk. "

Apple has not been a big help so far. I used Airport to archive my TimeCapsule to another USB disk, and then connecting direct to my MacBook to see if I could see any of my files. It appears that it is in sparsebundle format and I don't know how to convert it back to a useful format. I took it to the Genius bar, and the guy said "you have a lot of music files on here in a folder called 'bands'"

Good luck, and be sure that Lion is actually not corrupting your Time Capsule. You'll never know until you try to get it back
