My keyboard backlight on my MBP does not turn on (even in dim areas) since installing Lion. It doesn't even seem to recognize the F5 and F6 buttons like it used to. I'm afraid I didn't do a software update before downloading. Anyone else having this problem?

Mission Control steals these keys by default, does fn-F5/6 work?
Nope, I just tried it. All the other fn keys work, such as the screen brightness and volume buttons, just not the keyboard backlight.
Can you set them in System Preferences/Keyboard, you will have to change the settings for Mission Control too
Hmm, it seems that when I go into System Preferences --> Keyboard that there is no option to "Automatically illuminate keyboard in low light." It was there prior to Lion install...
Not good news that, unless they moved it. Unfortunately my current MacBook doesn't have an illuminated keyboard so I fear this is where I must bow out...

Problem solved!! Resetting the SMC did the trick. :-)

Are you sure you effectively reset the SMC? I'm just saying it solved the issue for me and newbienot4long.
In case SMC did not work, try pressing the F5/F6 button. Does that work?
I had a always on backlight, which is now turned off by pressing F5.
Yes, I reset the SMC 3 times, but no luck. The F5/F6 buttons seem to work OK, since I do get the visual feedback on the screen.
I have the same issue. Have reset SMC. My F5/F6 buttons do not work, and there is still no ootion in System Preferences/Keyboard to illuminate keyboard.
