I torn my hair out over Lion - way too slow, BUT after checking my Activity Monitor, I found the problem to be CARBONITE backup app. The minute I told it use a LOWER PRIORITY and then PAUSED it, my mac was back to lightning speed. Try it. At least check Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder. See what is at the top of the list using most of your CPU,

Am I correctly surmising that there isn't any real "fix"for this problem?

Some lucky people just don't experience it, but if you do, you're pretty much screwed?

I can open apps ok, but cannot write any text, as it takes 10 - 15 seconds for four or five characters to enter and there really isn't any relationship between what/where I type and where the text appears.

I was hoping it was the mouse, but it`s the same with the trackpad.

It has taken me ~five minutes to type this.

And I can no longer access this forum from my iPad.

So you have two different problems. Your Lion problems sound like a corrupted install. If you can I'd re-download it from the App store and install again. You can try the recovery partition first, restart with 'command' and 'r' held down, choose recovery disk and reinstall.

Ok, so i've tried everything suggested on this forum and tried everything else via other forums and help pages but my MacBook pro is still running slow under Lion... just like the hundreds of the other users who are having the same problems... Obviously, it would seem to me and everyone else, that there is problem with Lion.

But as a long standing advocate and customer of Apple (since my G4 tower in the late 90's) I'd wish for once they'd put their hands up and say "Ok we're aware of the problem, we're doing our best to solve the issue" after all, this is a Mac website forum and you'd think someone from Apple were taking notes. But the attitude from Apple, it would seem is "you'll get over it when we bring out out next shiny must have object of desire" ... Iphone 3 users will remember when their phones slowed down after the ios4 update it was the same silence from apple then... "you'll get over it, you'll just have to buy an iphone 4"

Maybe the announcement of Mountain Lion due out in the summer, is Apple's in-direct way of saying we've got wrong, after all, I can't remember when two OSX's have been released so close together.

I apologies for my rant and I'm sure someone will say I should of posted this elsewhere but I'm just a bit worried my beloved Apple are becoming a bit to big for their boots and losing sight of their customers. I'm also hoping, really hoping someone at Apple is taking notes! ... I just want my mac to work properly, is that too much to ask for?

I Also tried everything. Looking from an optimistic point of view, and as this is my first MBP, i really went deep in all aspects of my mac and SW. I was loving everything untill I've upgraded to lion. Tried foruns, blogs, apple store support team, sending e-mail to apple and calling, but as a friend told before, it seems i'm crazy and that only I have this Issue. From last july, it's like i'm back to windows vista, waiting up to 3 minutes to open a program and 5 to shut down mac. Battery is resisting hary for 1 hour. The only exit is to wait next OS. I love everything related to apple, but the lack of answers is making me put apple at the same level as other manufactures.

After many months with this problem, I found the glorious solution. Upgrade memory to 8Gb, and things are lightning fast. OMG, how much pain it cost me during those months, and now everything is smooth fast, except boot that still takes a minute or more. Shame on apple for Lion/Vista require so much memory and not being clear to users of non SSD disks that with even 4Gb after a few apps are launched the system would start to crawl.

Lets wait for montain lion.

Cheers
