Lion is very slow please help!

Oddly enough, Lion is as slow as a pig.

- my computer wakes up only after patience and prodding

- Mail seems unable to fully launch - it now crashes when I open it.

- not a single app runs as well as it used to.

- spotlight's done its thing, time machine has done its thing, so my CPU is no longer maxed out all the time.

- I detect no concern on Apple's part, so I'm not holding my breath for any upcoming fix - but then perhaps this is the way the are >supposed< to work.

Took mine to the Apple store and had their techs looking at my computer. Said Lion should run perfectly on my computer. He ran disk utility and a few other programs. It worked faster for a few days and has slowed again. My son took his in, they ran through the same process and his is working fine.

It's pretty clear that the creators didn't test the upgrade for very long on a variety of systems.

The techs said they have a looooong line of folks coming in with problems. My take after leaving the Window's world over this problem. . .Lion is Apple's Vista. They released a program before it was ready, at this point it's obvious. Vista's main problem was that the OS was released before programs were created specifically for it. I think Lion will be a problem until they release programs specifically created for Lion.

I turned off extensions in Safari (thanks to the person who wrote about this first)..

Then I turned off Flash as another way to help..

Then I turned off Spotlight search for everything and drug my hard drive into the spotlight privacy panel as another user suggested... (Thank you, too..)

My system is now running FASTER than it did under Snow Leopard.. Doing these three things really helped Lion run better on my 2009 MacBook...

I just hope that the speed and responsiveness continue..

The only problem I have is with phtoshop.

All other apps seem to work normaly.

I'm stuck though. There are good features in lion but I miss the leaping speed of leopard !

Yes, you're right, you caught Apple.

I was having all these symptoms. I was even avoiding using my mac.

I found that resetting the SMC worked a treat. It’s still running warm but 10 times faster.

Or incompetent? Disconnected to the real world of Apple's installed base?

Or more likely, aren't >we< the testing community? I'm kicking myself for having upgraded as soon as Lion was available.

I have to report the same message: LION IS SLOWWWWWW - and causes problems with wacom intuos 4 - and many other issues.. i use macs since over 15 years.. i never got so dissapointed - my macbook pro is just an half year old but acts like a four year old computer.. is it really time to switch to Linux? Dear Apple - I know you make tons of money with the iphone , itunes etc.. but remember your roots.. suporting creative people with a fast OS .. isn't speed the most important thing.. and usability.. ??? i don' tthink LION is so much better then SNOW Lep. - most of all - LION keeps freezing.. like an old ready to die cat.. LION feels like the first version of OSX...

I'm a beta tester and Lion runs well and without glitches but my only complaint is slow, slow boot time from Leopard. I have the latest 13" MBP and boot time feels like I'm 3 yrs behind on hardware for the OSX. Hopefully things will speed up with point releases.

You do not need more RAM. You need to repair the disk. Start-up using the install disc, while pressing C. select language, then disk utilities in the top row. select the disk (mine was Macintosh HD) then REPAIR at the bottom right. I had missing, unpaired links / commands. Then restart from the install dvd. My entire MBP was very slow, items on my dock almost not selectable, pages took forever to load. Simply repairing permissions made no difference. Now Lion is working like a charm.

Repairing the disk (from the restore disk) helped a lot. But I just followed these instructions to rid the vmnet items that were all over my console log: http://blog.enricostahn.com/disable-vmware-fusions-vmnet-daemons-on-mac-o . You may not like disabling the vmware fusion daemon, but the speedup was dramatic for me.

I was having same problem. I went to apple store to check and was suggested a clean install of lion. I also had problem with it loosing internet setting. Except for slightly slow boot everything else is fixed now. If this helps anyone.

Just an update. After a few weeks of distress, and almost going back to a PC, I re-installed Lion from the Recovery Disk, deleted all my gmail attachments on Mail (had 50GB of it), re-indexed the whole HD. Now Lion is running smooth and flawlessly.

Thanks APierce24, I di what you said and wow what a difference, when I verified my disk the text was almost completely red. I think it is the fastest I've seen it since I bought it.
