Did you try to force quit iTunesHelper ? I know that it interfers with the installation of XCode 4.1

Sorry, haven't seen that issue, but then I've only installed Xcode 4.2, not bother to updating to 4.2.1 because I detest DLing the entire thing just to get some update. The update should be available separately, but then this new, but unimproved, delivery system would come under attack. I suspect that you'll have to bite the bullet and reinstall Lion, using the saved installer you have on your machine. But, if you've failed to retain it, you'll have to waste another hour or two DLing the stupid thing AGAIN.

I am trying to install Xcode 4.2.1 downloaded from the app store

every time some time during the installation it stops and this error occurs: (see screenshot below)

"Installation failed. The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance"

essentially, I followed this threat

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3199866?start=90&tstart=0

and links therein

independently what I do:

- deleted old Xcode 3 installation via

sudo /Developer/Library/uninstall-devtools --mode=all

- when I run the installer directly, and when I run Xcode.mpkg found in the package contents of the installer

- having killed the itunes helper and made sure it's not checked under startup items

- if I start it from terminal, sudoed --- cd /Aplications sudo open Install\ Xcode.app/

- clicking the "try again" button

- there are 65GB HD space available

- neither verify disk nor repair disk did help

Could something else be done?

The following two things could be done, I guess, but:

- I could replace packages in the installer, if I had any. Also, that doesn't seem very reasonable to do, especially since somebody in this threat has pointed out that it's unlikely the installer. On the other hand, the log file (see below) seems to indicate just that. Not sure what this means then.

- I could try something with sudo, which I don't understand, hence I am hesitant

1: Repair Disk Permissions with Disk Utility to recover the functionality of sudo.

2: Using the Terminal: "sudo chmod 0440 /etc/sudoers".

3: Restart install Xcode.

4: Success

Are there any other things I could try?

Thanks,

Claus

Ok. I fixed this:

the decisice line was in /var/log/install.log

Dec 13 16:23:56 account _securityagent[537]: Begin script: AlertAll.sh

Dec 13 16:23:56 account installd[518]: ./preinstall: root is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.

So I made sure that in /etc/sudoers this line is there (and it should be, I had removed it earlier)

root ALL=(ALL) ALL

then the installation runs smoothly.
