Safari 5.1 under 10.6.8: various issues (responsability, scrolling, etc)

another tip to resolve all those issues is to disable multi-processing windows in the debug menu.

1. to show the safari debug menu open the terminal, copy paste the following line and hit enter:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 1

2. restart safari and in the "Debug" menu select "Use Multi-process Windows" so that it is unchecked.

3. (optional) to hide the debug menu, open terminal again (if not still open), copy paste the following line and hit enter. afterwards close the terminal and restart safari.

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 0

Yep. Just upgraded to Safari 5.1 earlier this week and it has many problems. Plugin incompatibility issues - websites breaking - it hangs up at random times for no reason - even on simple page loads.

Running 5.1 on 10.6.8

Went out to the Mac OS X HINTS Link provided above and got to the Achive Restore File and reverted back to Safari 5.0.5.

So far things seem to at least be back to what they were last week before my upgrade to 5.1.

Haven't tested everything yet - but we'll see.

Hopefully Apple outs another update for Snow Leopard to fix the problems with 5.1 and doesn't simply leave those Customers hanging that "cannot readily upgrade their equipment every year so we can stay inside the actively supported group" bubble.

Downloaded 5.1.1 Safari update, on iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Web pages, particularly with flash, are hanging... went through this two updates ago... leary of any upgrade to Lion for sure.

I have not downgraded Safari yet, but I've found a kind of a workaround.

I keep a lot of tabs open and tend to leave Safari open for days at a time. After a while it gets laggy, as described in this thread, particularly when when scrolling or loading pages. Sometimes when I click a link it will pause for several seconds before doing anything. Everything is slow. Quitting the program and reopening fixes things, but it's a pain. (I have to save and restore all the tabs)

Instead of this, I've found I can open Activity Monitor (in Utilities), select "Safari Web Content" and quit that process. Safari will reload all of the active pages and the lagging stops (for a while).

I have the same problems with Safari, it's almost unusable.

I downgraded to 5.0.5 on my MacBook and now I remember what a great browser Safari USED to be.

I really am saddened by Apple's lack of interest in this problem. Apple becomes the new Microsoft. yuck.

I have just installed the Safari 5.1.2 update, which claims to address all the issues I and you all have been dealing with. So far I haven't had any beach balls or sudden reloads, but after less than an hour of light use, my Safari Web Content process is already using 1GB or real memory. Not a great sign.

5.0.5 doesn't seem to be available for download anymore, either.😠

I have to, still, make a good experience with Safari, even with 5.1.2.

The trouble usually starts with Apple Mail. When I read my RSS feed and click on pages, the whole interaction between Apple Mail and Safari bogs down, with the Safari Web Content process easily exceeding 1GB, this happens on 20 clicks from the RSS feed as it does with 40.

It is not only that Safari in these cases slows down, but it really hangs, with no longer loading any pages. I have to kill Safari Web Content process, and then I can go through the pages reloading, one by one.

5.1.2 is a bit of an improvement so far in terms of overall performance (haven't gotten all the beach balls, etc), but the Safari Web Content process still seems to have some kind of bad memory leak. It only takes an hour or two for it to balloon to 1.5GB+, regardless of whether AdBlock is on or off, and even regardless of whether I'm loading new pages or doing anything, really. It just sits there getting bigger and bigger.

Seems like Safari has always had a memory leak issue, but with 5.1 it seems like it's moved to the separate Web Content process and it's even worse.

Because for me, when I was on facebook with that extension I has THE problem. I desactivated it then from the extension's preferences... Now i have no more problems with it on my Safari 5.1.2 on MAC OSX 10.6.8 with "Use multi-process windows" turned on. I sent a message to the dev few minutes ago to inform him about the issue.

The first method worked pretty good for me, thanks. The second one I tried first and didnt work since my original installation was 5.1 with the 10.6.8.

Absolutely! I totally agree! Apple service is getting real worse these days! The Safari bug is known for many months, but nothing, absoluty nothing ! happens to solve this issue!

There are many other things coming to my mind, which remind me on MS. Nowadays Apple seems only to be focused on counting their money they made within the last years. They don't care for their customers anymore. It's sad... 😠
