Customizing the Finder sidebar in Lion?

Lion's Finder sidebar categories are now inverted? I'm accustomed to having the DEVICES category at the top of the list, then SHARED, then FAVORITES. I can't find a way to reorganize these categories. Am I missing something?

You're not missing anything, that's the way it is now. No way to reorganize that I'm aware of.

Of course, that's the point!

The point is as it was, there's no needing to change the order of the items shown on the sidebar as it was like we are demanding from the beginnings of the sidebar in Mac OS X.

The "genius" or "geniouses" who have changed it must think about the way to let us change the position of the groups to the order we want.

Why? When working with multiple external drives and servers it's more accessible to have devices at top than a list of "favorites"... I don't have favorite folders, all my folders are my favorites!!

I'm in the same boat. I do EVERYTHING based on the file structure. It's one of the things I loved about Apples.

Putting the Devices down at the bottom is causing me to curse Apple every time I do anything. That's a lot of cursing. Also, what happened to the horizontal silder in finder? Why does the vertical slider in Itunes now disappear? Are you folks at Apple actively trying to upset us on purpose? If you are, it's working.

These changes are driving me nuts.

I feel like I got T-Boned in an accident by going from Snow Leopard to Lion. I don't like Lion at all.

Don't get me started on Lion Server.

So sad to see this drop in the quality of Apple products.

I only hope it's not a sign of more things to come now that Mr. Jobs is no longer with us (RIP).

Ed, you are RIGHT. Command key etc does NOT work 😟

I have added 'always visible' to my computer, as you say, that DOES work.

But there is a weird bug. My SSD startup disk does NOT stay on top. Actually, it also ALWAYS dissapears form devices as I restart. And, that, frankly, drives me round the bend. like the 'feature' to hide the libraries folder.

So please, does nayone how to fix the sidebar? And the apple menu while we are at it

This hack has never worked for me and based on other reviews, it looks like SIMBL in Lion is quirky at best. Of course, this goes back to my original point of what a waste of time all this crap is. I know that Apple often makes changes such as dropping Flash support to get rid of vestigial software. People ***** for while, but later realize it was the right choice. (Killing Flash is the right choice). But these changes to the sidebar were a mistake and they need to fix it. I use computers with both Snow Leopard and Lion. Guess what? It's still much easier to navigate in Snow Leopard than in Lion, so it is NOT just a matter for me getting used to the new way things work.

Booh!

PS: Interesting use of contrasting colors all over this webpage including the icons to edit this post. They really make it easier to see them.

Did you kill the Finder process after you rebooted? If you've followed the instructions carefully, but forgotten that last little trick, that should do it for you.

To quit Finder, fire up Terminal and type

killall Finder

Then hit return. Finder will quit and relaunch and you should have your color icons, assuming you installed SIMBL and followed the other steps.
