iMac with Lion not waking after overnight sleep

Since upgrading to Lion a few days ago, my iMac (2010) won't wake up with magic keypad swipe, button press, spacebar or any other key. Works fine and wakes fine when used periodically during the day, but is locked tight upon first use in the AM. The only thing that works is a hard power off and reboot. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Before calling Apple, I did the following unsuccessfully:

1. Reset SMC

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

2. Set the Battery and Screen in POWER MANAGEMENT to Never

3. Reset PRAM/NVRAM

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

When talking to them, they walked me though

1. Setting POWER MANAGEMENT to 30 minutes for all (to see if there was a change)

2. Boot into safe mode, only when I did this Safe mode was not a option.

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564

3. Since this happened, and the system did not make the tone noise when booting, they told me to reload Lion.

This was done by turning off, then whilst turning on hold cntl R ( I think). I then followed the menu to reload OS-X.

Hi all.

Just noticed this thread - same here iMac not waking up from long sleeps - both bluetooth keyboard and mouse/trackpad are dead.

Anyway made a discovery tonigh whilst stuck in its usual mode of not responding, i was about to pull the mains cord when i decided to plug in my USB mouse - it worked!

So the CPU hasnt frozen as such - more like a bug in the Bluetooth drivers/stack.

I tried putting BT off but I got the beachball and it stuck there - I was going to attempt to restart BT.

So I learnt what is going on but unable to fix it.

I never had this problem until the day I put LION on as an upgrade!

Apple please fix ASAP!

I tried the same thing -- plugged in my USB mouse and it also worked! I wasn't able to go into bluetooth under system preferences -- tried it and had to do a "force quit" to get out. A restart also did not get things going again, but I was able to do a normal shutdown with the usb mouse. When I restarted -- all was well again with the trackpad and keyboard working again.

Clearly -- a bluetooth problem. C'mon Apple -- fix this thing.

Apple says this on "troubleshooting bluetooth":

  1. Check for a Bluetooth update
To check for new software, choose Software Update from the Apple menu (make sure that your computer is connected to the Internet). If newer Apple Bluetooth software exists, Software Update will prompt you to install it. To install an update, select the checkbox next to the software name and then click Install.
  2. Reduce potential signal interference
Because Bluetooth works by transmitting signals through the air, some things can interfere with connections. Avoid situations in which metal objects come between your device and computer. Don't put your computer under a metal desk or in a metal cabinet. Keep your computer away from cordless phone base stations, microwave ovens, and other electrical devices that operate on a 2.4 GHz bandwidth. Make sure that your device and computer aren't more than 30 feet apart from each other.
  3. Restart your computer
Sometimes a simple restart of your Mac is all it takes to get things running smoothly again. You may also want to try resetting your computer's PRAM and NVRAM.
  4. Reset your Bluetooth device
Try turning your device off and then on again. If that doesn't resolve the issue, see if you can reset your device—refer to the documentation that came with your device for instructions.

What made my iMac perform perfectly after the Lion upgrade straight from SL was the following:

Shut Down

Start while holding down the Alt key

Choose the Recovery disk

Choose Disk Utility

Choose your volume (usually Macintosh HD)

Repair disk

Then repair permissions

Reboot

The result was an amazingly fast and responsive OSX Lion

Hope this help others, thanks

Same thing here:

Starting with (clean) installation of Lion my iMac (early 2009) looses all bluetooth connections after long sleep. Old USB mouse works. Bluetooth settings freeze in system preferences. Only reboot helps to fix the bt problem. Sometimes the system freezes completly on reboot, only the grey apple and a frozen spinner are visible...

Please fix that Apple!

Hi. I have filed a bug report to apple on this and they are looking into it it appears.

I am sure many others have reported it as well by now.

It just happened to me again- this time after returning to my imac after about 4 hours - its very annoying.

Anyway, same as before I plugged in my USB mouse but was unable to bring back any other control surface.

I clicked on apple shutdown menu and it shut down to a white screen with a small rotating wheel animation which never went away sadly... In the end - I had to pull the plug again...

I am fairly new to macs - 2 years or so - on my old windows systems after such a hard reset - I would always do a hard disk check/repair just to be sure the disk was ok.

What is the best recommended practise - a repair disk then repair permissions?

Anyway - I did that last time I had to pull the plug and it clearly didnt help on my system stellamaris5 - sadly...

Well I have noticed a lot of IMac's with this problem, and you can add a Mac Pro 3.1 2008 to the list😁 Mine is or was great before the update , but i would like to point out that it's running a lot faster since the update to Lion.

I hope they don't put out an update to slow me down Like IMOVIE has turned into ISNAIL...on a lighter note i would like to say that the ATI Radeon HD 5770 works just perfect in the Mac Pro 2008 with cinema display,Motion also got a got kick with this upgrade. I know it's not part of the conversation but i just wanted to share and my eyes have been glued to this section waiting to here good news from apple. You know they should put a note on the APP Store about the sleepy Mac so people can hold back until it's sorted instead of just letting them purchase the app. Grrr

Every time when you startup after shutdown, there is a diagnostics.

See the result in Applications/Utilities/System Profiler, line 5.

Repair permissions not necessarily normally.

Bluetooth problem is acknowledged by Apple, and there are several suggestions to solve it, but none is working for all.

I use a usb mouse for the time being having BT switched off.

An update for Lion is expected soon.
