WiFi doesn't restore like it used to after sleep

Before the Lion upgrade, our Macbook Pro would very quickly and reliably pick back up on the wifi network and reconnect.

Since Lion, pretty much every time (can't speak for the occasions my wife used it), it's either MUCH slower to reestablish the wifi connection or it doesn't do it at all. Can be solved by turning the wifi off then back on again, but this is a pain.

Has anyone else encountered the same?

Could it be related to the new config required to provide the 'Airdrop' functionality? (maybe disabling Airdrop would solve it?)

Ok, spoke with Apple Support. They are aware of the problema and are pushing out a fix. The remedy that I found for my MacBook Pro, circa 2010, was to eject the disc from the optical drive. Then my computer connects to wifi without problem after waking up from sleep. Sounds stupid, but it works. Learned it from another user in this forum. Spread the word.

Hi! For me the answer was - and remains, as I've just tried again without it and the connection dropped immediately - something I found on the OSXDaily site (http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/22/wifi-dropping-in-os-x-lion-fixes/). This is a simple and, I've found, extremely effective workaround until the problem is fixed, which it wasn't in the 10.7.1 upgrade. Give it a try!

Another Idea: Maintaining Data Transfer

Another theory is that when data transfer stops, the wireless connection inappropriately drops. You can avoid that by simply launching the Terminal and pinging a random address, this causes a miniscule amount of data transfer to occur and that can be enough to maintain an active network connection.

  • Launch Terminal (accessed at /Applications/Utilities/Terminal or by using Spotlight)
  • Type “ping yahoo.com” at the command line and you will see something like this
  • ping yahoo.com
    64 bytes from 98.137.149.56: icmp_seq=91 ttl=52 time=27.806 ms
    64 bytes from 98.137.149.56: icmp_seq=92 ttl=52 time=27.763 ms
    64 bytes from 98.137.149.56: icmp_seq=91 ttl=52 time=27.806 ms
    64 bytes from 98.137.149.56: icmp_seq=92 ttl=52 time=27.763 ms
  • Just let that run in the background, it isn’t resource intensive

Has anyone noticed that they didn't have the problem re-connecting to wi-fi with 10.7 and then when the update (that was supposed to fix this) all of the sudden it started happening to them? This happened with me and it's ******* me off! It worked fine befoer the update and now every 3rd or 4th time I awake from sleep it won't connect to my wi-fi!

Oh now THAT would "inhale deeply"!

I'm going to try to remove all my network connections again and then re-create them after re-boot. I'll let this thread know the outcome but I'm honestly not hopefull of a correction.

HEY...anybody reading this...PLEASE be sure to create a ticket with Apple Support...they need to know it's still a problem.

Thanks

Interesting situation for me...

After waking I do not have the problem every time (after deleting & re-adding the networks). When I do have a problem I found that if I refresh the page...the connection appears to work and I can browse just fine.

The connection is NOT working consistently however as proven by my email not automatically downloading any new mail.

I'm sorry but I expected more from Apple on this one....
