Bluetooth audio in OSX Lion

In Snow leopard, I would use a plantronics bluetooth headset for facetime and skype chats. Now, in Lion, I can't. I keep getting a bluetooth audio error. I live in a dead zone, so this is a pretty important thing for me.

The console shows the following errors:

7/22/11 3:21:11.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: mClientResponseTimedOut == false - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioDevice.cpp:711

7/22/11 3:21:11.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: result == kIOReturnSuccess - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioEngine.cpp:270

I have also noticed that odd things happen to my audio as long as the device is paired, wether or not it is active. Audio is sometimes output as mono, volume controls do not work for the line out, and audio mutes (even thoguh it is shown as unmuted) at random moments. None of this can be resolved as long as the headset is paired.

Is there anything I can do to get my iMac to use the bluetooth earpiece that worked just fine in Snow Leopard?

iMac 7,1, Mac OS X (10.7)

I did download and install the latest xCode, once it is installed.

Click in the Xcode icon and open it.

In the top menu: Click on Xcode

then 'Open Developer Tools' -> 'More Developer Tools'

You will need to sign in or create an account as Xcode developer. When you sign in just type in the search field 'hardware io'.

Select and download the latest version of Hardware IO Tools for Xcode.

Once is download open the *.dmg file. In the other hand, in your application Xcode app folder do a right click and select: 'show package content'

Drag and drop all the tools from the 'hardware io' dmg file you just downloaded and place them in the 'contents->applications folder inside the Xcode app folder.

Now if you open the Xcode->Open Developers tools->Bluethoot Explorer

With Bluethoot Explorer open select from the top menu: Tools->Audio Options

I played with the options and realized that the problem was in my case with the bit rate. So I increased the number of packets that can be buffered to 50 and also the latency.

There are many bluethoot tools and graphs that you can use to troubleshoot and check where is the problem with the Xcode Hardware IO.

Let me know, with what configuration you were able to fix your problem.

Greetings.

Well I was having issues with Jaybird Freedom Wireless blutooth headphones in that they would pair succesfully but wouldn't stay connected, they would just connect and then disconnect.

I did some troubleshotting:

I created a new account and attempted to pair them - that occured sucessfully

I selected the headphones as the audio device - that occured sucessfully

I opened spotify and see if it worked - I was able to hear the music in good quality

Switched back to my main account:

Repeated the steps and I was still getting the same issue with the bluetooth audio error popping up intermitently.

So I swiched back to my "Diagnostic" acccount and repeated the steps again no issues and the headphones worked, this lead me to believe that I was having a software issue and realized that I have the "Boom" software opened in my admin account, but not in my diagnostic account. This software amplifies the volume on your mac, but it was turned off in my diagnostic account. As soon as I opened the app I stopped hearing audio coming from my headphones I started getting the bluetooth error and the audio quality was horrible if it managed to remain connected.

I exited the application completely (not just simply turn it off in the apps settings) removed the headphones from my bluetooth device list, re-paired them, selected them as my audio device and opened spotify and they were working again no issues.

I logged back into my admin account and unistalled app completely and voila the headphones started working properly!!!

Somehow the drivers/software was screwing up my headphone's ability to stay connected, so if you are having issues it may be worth looking into any software that installs any sound drivers and see if those may be causing the issue.

Has anyone been able to resolve Apple's problem with Bluetooh headset, I was using an I-Con PS3 headset and when I upgraded to OS-X 10.7.3 and 10.7.4 everything stopped working.

I went through all the suggestions, we are talking a lot of happy hours lost, to no avail.

Is it to much to ask Apple to do it's homework ? I paid good money for that operating system and I do not intend to go back to an older OS.

Has anyone had success using BT headset (I have a Plantronics M50) with Cisco Jabber? Running Lion 10.7.4 on late 2011 MBP. I can pair the headset OK but everytime I try to make a call the connection is lost and I get the "A Bluetooth audio error occurred." message. Can't see anything in the logs. Most frustrating!

If anyone has any advice to help solve this, would be most apprieciated. Thanks.

I'm experiencing the same issue with Sennheiser MM550, I have found some posts which explain how to try to increase the audio quality which include tempering with Bluetooth Explorer to set the minium bluetooth bitpool and with HALLab. But I still experimet low quality and a popping noise. Is there a REAL solution to this?

It is really lame to have to configure the headsts this way and the resultung sound produced with the bluetooth device is still poor, in addition the sound volume is low.

Could'nt they just use the driver that they use for the iPhone, the headpones connected to my iPhone just sound awesome!!!!

Thanks coolspot, I also think that the problem lies with the Bluetooth implementation of OSX, but the one of the iPhone works just fine... I hope that the people form Apple could fix that, because the sound received using Bluetooth is really bad, and it has a lot of popping noises whenever the driver detects that the sound stops and starts.

I hope you tell us if you get any response form Sennheiser, I will e-mail them also, maybe they can come up with some tweaks to make the headsets work better.
