Bluetooth audio in OSX Lion

In Snow leopard, I would use a plantronics bluetooth headset for facetime and skype chats. Now, in Lion, I can't. I keep getting a bluetooth audio error. I live in a dead zone, so this is a pretty important thing for me.

The console shows the following errors:

7/22/11 3:21:11.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: mClientResponseTimedOut == false - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioDevice.cpp:711

7/22/11 3:21:11.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: result == kIOReturnSuccess - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioEngine.cpp:270

I have also noticed that odd things happen to my audio as long as the device is paired, wether or not it is active. Audio is sometimes output as mono, volume controls do not work for the line out, and audio mutes (even thoguh it is shown as unmuted) at random moments. None of this can be resolved as long as the headset is paired.

Is there anything I can do to get my iMac to use the bluetooth earpiece that worked just fine in Snow Leopard?

I did download and install the latest xCode, once it is installed.

Click in the Xcode icon and open it.

In the top menu: Click on Xcode

then 'Open Developer Tools' -> 'More Developer Tools'

You will need to sign in or create an account as Xcode developer. When you sign in just type in the search field 'hardware io'.

Select and download the latest version of Hardware IO Tools for Xcode.

Once is download open the *.dmg file. In the other hand, in your application Xcode app folder do a right click and select: 'show package content'

Drag and drop all the tools from the 'hardware io' dmg file you just downloaded and place them in the 'contents->applications folder inside the Xcode app folder.

Now if you open the Xcode->Open Developers tools->Bluethoot Explorer

With Bluethoot Explorer open select from the top menu: Tools->Audio Options

I played with the options and realized that the problem was in my case with the bit rate. So I increased the number of packets that can be buffered to 50 and also the latency.

There are many bluethoot tools and graphs that you can use to troubleshoot and check where is the problem with the Xcode Hardware IO.

Let me know, with what configuration you were able to fix your problem.

Greetings.

Is anyone from Apple Support actually reading this thread?? It seems insane that these problems have been going on for so long and for so many people without any acknowledgement or feedback from Apple.

Oh, and to step up to the soapbox for a sec...

What could Apple do with all of its money? Build a factory and promote a supply chain in the US so its products can pump more $$ into the domestic economy and begin to reverse the trade deficit.

I believe I have found the solution to this problem.

In the bluetooth menu of system preferences:

Select the devices you are experiencing problems with.

Click the settings button (the gear with the downard pointing arrow)

Select "Edit Serial Ports"

Select the + sign and add your device, then click apply.

Go back to the configuration and select 'use as audio device'

Worked for my Altec Lansing inMotion bluetooth speaker that was not connecting to Lion at ALL but had worked fine in all previous versions of OS X since Tiger.

I hope this helps!

I'm using a 2011 MBP running lion 10.7.3, and a Lotgitech bluetooth audio receiver, which is working fine with my Android phone.

Today I installed a software update on my mac like always when it prompts me to, and the receiver stopped working. It has worked great up until today. Now itunes and google music will not play unless I select "stop using as audio device" and revert back to the computer's speakers.

The device is paired, and selected as audio device but shows as always "disconnected" (red dot), and when i click "update services" in the device preferences menu, it connects (green dot) for about ten seconds, then goes back to disconnected mode. Any ideas?

Am seeing the same problem with a newly purchased Sony Ericsson MW600. Works flawlessly with Windows 7, but hours of fiddling on two different Macs running Lion has seen it work only twice, each time only briefly and immediately after setting up the pairing on both ends from scratch. Four lines in the console stand out:

21/04/2012 21:39:04.000 kernel: REQUIRE failure: mClientResponseTimedOut == false - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-4030.4.12/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioDevice.cpp:711

21/04/2012 21:39:07.000 kernel: [SendHCIRequestFormatted] ### ERROR: [0xFC48] (UNKNOWN) -- Send request failed (err = 0x0012 (kBluetoothHCIErrorInvalidHCICommandParameters))

Echoing other posts, a response from Apple would be good on this one.

Sennheiser MM400's here, with a 24" iMac. These heaphones work flawlessly with my iPhone, but when switching to the computer at home I found a version of the problems everyone here is expressing.

After repeated attempts, with the 10.7.3 OS build, I discovered the same thing that into_the_blue describes, or something similar anyway. In the case of these particular headphones, I've noticed that if I choose the Update Services option, then choose to use as an audio device and do nothing to adjust volume on the computer , that the BT connection will drop again within 30 seconds. At this point, if I adjust the sound (after the connection drops), I'll see a reconnect in the preferences window, but no sound, and the eventual Bluetooth audio error... prompt to stop using the headphones.

However, if after choosing to Update Services, I select the option to use the headphones as an audio device, either through the BT preferences drop down, or the Sound Preferences menu(s) (panel or drop down), and then adjust the sound levels, I then get the tonal signal in the Sennhieser headphones that indicates connection, and I'm getting the service I expected. If there is no audio, after a period you'll hear what sounds like a drop of audio service to the headphones (in a quite room), but the BT connection will not drop. Any volume adjustment or continuation of the audio feed will keep the sound coming to the cans. 🙂

Should it be Simple(r)? I should say so. It's a pity for anyone to have to wait for the next version of OSX to get reliable service from a tech that is getting...long in the tooth? <cough>
