Bluetooth audio in OSX Lion

It's not even choppy... it's a total disconnect from the device... One user already posted this pic of what happens... I'll link to it again. I read on one of the posts here that if you Exit out of Apple Mail it solves the problem but as soon as you launch mail you get disconnected from your Bluetooth device shortly after.

The other noticable change is that you can't have different Applications using different audio devices. For example I can't access my bluetooth head set unless I tell Lion to Use it as the main audio device from the bluetooth device menu. At which my bluetooth audio device will show up in skype. In Snow Leopard, Skype could independently connect to your bluetooth headset. So audio from the O/S would come from your internal speakers and your skype call could use your Bluetooth headset. It was really convenient.

Thats exact what makes me unhappy! Plus the problem with interruption.

I cant believe, that Apple has not changed anything about this Problem in 10.7.1 -.-

I talked w/AppleCare today and there is an Apple Internal memo acknowledging that there is a BT Problem specifically when folks are utilizing BT with a computer that is wireless on a network.

In my case I have the BT audio in/audio out/connectivity problems on a MBP [wireless] and a 2007 iMac [Ethernet to Time Capsule] so that surprised the AppleCare support person.

For Hortensia and others who have regained BT connectivity, I am happy for you. Is it across all applications or just iTunes?

My BT JawBone Icon and LG HBM-210 worked flawlessly in Snow Leopard on every application and will work in Lion if I just want to listen to a track in iTunes, but any system sound effects and usage of Skype and Apple's own apps iChat/FaceTime/PhotoBooth have abysmal results.

I may hang in there until 10.7.2 arrives in several weeks or a month but if it's not repaired, I'm heading back to Snow Leopard.

I'm tired of this issue and unresponsive nature of this new OS yielding the Spinning Pinwheel of Doom whenever I scroll a page in Safari, cut & paste some text or peruse through some PDF document.

Whoever hung the analogy that Lion is Apple's Vista, hit the nail on the head.

I can confirm that the solution works at least across some programs, but not all. I am pretty unsatisfied with Safari period. Haven't used if for over a year, because it is such a resource hog.

As to Lion, on the other hand, I can't be more happy. I completely disagree with your viewpoint. I have it running on four machines and all are running MUCH better than they did under Snow Leopard. Aside from this relatively minor issue of BT sound, I love it. This is HARDLY a Vista comparison product.

The fix works for me so far: eliminating the two things that were really driving me nuts -- that I couldn't keep mail on because every time I got mail/looked for mail/sent mail the error messsage noted above came on and cut out itunes and that every time I paused itunes using bluetooth headphones it came back choppy and hideous when resumed.

Given how irritating those were I didn't try hooking up my wireless mouse, and in fact I plan to have a days relief before forging on with that. Not exactly filled with confidence!!

Myself I think the problem is the logo -- everyone knows that it is the female lions that are the real hunters -- the males just lie around waiting to be admired.

And having bad hair days.

I called AppleCare twice now, went through 2 hours of troubleshooting (combined), sent the log to their technicians. Finally they called back and left a message on my voicemail saying, "we can't understand why you're having a problem, we suggest you go to the Apple store to test it on their computers"... I'm currently working for a US company overseas (which I told them), so that's not an option. And clearly it's an issue with Lion--not my computer. I can't believe they still haven't worked this out yet. I'm with artfromeast longmeadow on this one, if they don't fix this issue within the next month, I'm heading back to Snow Leopard. And requesting a refund for this $30 headache. What a joke. Only spent $2700 on their "top of the line" laptop to get mediocre-at-best support.

The davidgreen solution worked for me too now, tried the repairing of the device before with no luck but this time I did everything that has been suggested.

1. Delete ALL paired BT devices.

2. Turn off BT. And all BT devices.

3. Turn off WiFi. (Some report that WiFi might interfere)

4. Quit Mail (Some report that Mail might interfere)

5. Restart Mac OS.

6. Turn on BT and go to Pair BT devices.

7. Turn on my BT audio device in paring mode (Jambox by Jawbone)

8. Select the BT audio deice as Use as Audio Device

9. Start to play a video in iTunes, audio ok, some delay but can't tell if it is more than before.

10 Turn on WiFi, audio in iTunes still ok.

11. Start Mail and sync all IMAP mailboxes, audio still ok.

(Multiple stop and start of video playback in step 9-11)

My guess is that it is the step of taking away all paired BT devices that is the key here since that may let the Lion BT service to start from a clean slate. Maybe in combination with the restart to get a clean start for new pairings.

As for the male Lion logo, male Lions do hunt if there are no females around to do the cooking, if food is served they hang around and provide security and mating services, not much different than some humas I know. 🙂

And Lion being like Vista it can in no way become that bad with an OS that is built on a Unix base where OS, GUI and apps are by design separated. I am overall very pleased with the upgrade except for this BT issue. I had another issue going with that the Auto Sleep wouldn't work and the Lion upgrade fixed that, however not the upgrade it self but when I ran a reinstall fix on the OS it got fixed.

update: bluetooth since the process even better detailed above by SunShineAG now works fine WITH HEADPHONES. when headphones are OFF and mail comes in: same old message.

sigh.

and pursuant to --- I guess this bluetooth isn't a security issue -- and the problem is that the second service isn't being provided.

Thanks for the step-by-step procedure, but my Plantronics 520 still brings bluetooth audio errors as soon as any sound is sent to it.

What headset works for you? At this point it would be worth it to me to buy a new headset that works with Lion.

It's definitly not the headsets, there are lots of reports on this thread from people with headsets from all the major manufacturers. I'd wait for a fix.... although try not having mail open when you're using it, I know it sounds crazy of all things mail right?

The issues folks are having with Mail at least have some success with some apps.

I get the bluetooth audio errors as soon as any sound is sent to the Plantronics Voyager 520. In Leopard and Snow Leopard it worked with all apps, including system alert sounds.

Mac OS 10.7.2 is coming soon, which I understand will introduce some iCloud stuff. I think we're probably waiting for 10.7.3 before we see this bug addressed.

Update 10.7.1:

I still have some problems and in particular if the BT audio device and the MBA is paired when the MBA goes to sleep then when the MBA wakes up again the audio is stuttered or I get the Audio error pop-up. If I turn BT off on both the BT device and the MBA and then on again and let them reconnect everything is back, at least with iTunes.

In regards for the problems with Mail I have not experienced them and I now think I know why, I have turned off all sounds in Mail, I don't like to get disturbed or distracted by arriving mail. (Work around for those Mail crashes the audio for other apps.)

I also only have one BT device paired to my MBA, this may also affect things since before when I could not get it to work at all I had a Sony BT headset and an Apple mouse also paired.

According to reports here I doubted that 10.7.1 would fix anything but to keep on top of this I decided to install the update. Back to square one, the error pop-up every time I tried to use the BT audio device. Had to remove the BT device, turn BT off on both MBA and device, restart and redo the pairing to get it to work again. Just to be safe I also turned off WiFi and quit Mail when I did the restart.

I just sent in another bug report to Apple updating my previous one so that they will not think this is fixed by reading this forum or thinking that 10.7.1 fixed it.

May I suggest that everyone that has not sent in a bug report for 10.7.1 do that!
