USB Devices not visible in Lion

Ever since I upgraded to Lion, none of my USB devices are visible in the 'DEVICES' tab in Finder. I've tried a jump drive and my external hard drive.

I'm using a 2011 MacBook Pro. Any ideas?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), iPad 1G 32 GB WiFi

I have a MacBook Pro, and for some weird reason just opening the storage feature made my laptop recognize the usb external storage. I've been without my backup for 9 months trying to figure it out, swaying through ponds of online advice. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
