I have been trying to find a solution for this and can't seem to find one. I prefer keeping the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Has anyone figured out how to disable the auto hide of the menu bar?
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)
Indeed, this feature is so aggravating. It's not the hiding that's aggravating so much as the un-hiding, the way the menu bar jumps out under your mouse cursor when you were really just going to the top of the window to click a tab or something.
That Esc trick does not work you just go back to smaller screen, jet again still does not fix the autohide problem.
Then try control-command-f.
control-command-f was what I was looking for, it leaves the menu bar on top with nothing else on the screen. Perfect! Except I can't do 3 finger scroll. Agh.
Note: I also disabled the display of my bottom app menu bar
Does any genius know how to do the opposite of this too; i.e. turn/keep ON auto-hide when NOT IN FULL-SCREEN mode?

It is a hassle to have to adjust the screen size for every document that you open. There should be one fix os that the toolbar staysin in view that will apply to all documents that you open.
how is this solved? There is no way to completely disable the auto hide feature on the application tool bar? Does anyone know of a hack? ugg... mac *****!!!!!!!!.

Personally, I like the Cinch app. It lets you do more than just full screen. Drag a window to the top of the screen and it makes it full screen (menu intact). Drag to the right it takes up the right half of the screen. Drag to the left it takes up the left half of the screen. So, more useful than the standard OS full screen.
i too had this problem , there isn't a hide menu far option, your actually just in fullscreen.to get the menu bar to stay in view while in apps like safari you simply have to minimize the window and click and drag the corners to the edges to where it still shows the menu bar. 🙂 i hope this was helpful and i understand your frustration.
ctrl-command-f Does the same thing as clicking the green button. Menu bar disappears.
found the answer from someone else here ...hit escape then expand the screen by the corners to size you want. Toolbars stay put

El Capitan now allows you to hide the menu bar by going to System Preferences, General, and checking the box "Automatically hide and show the menu bar"
I know this is an old post but what I use is Spectacle. It allows me to go fullscreen with Cmd+Alt+F and doesn't hide the toolbar. It also doesn't put the window on a separate desktop.
