stop office opening previous file

Hi,

I am using MS Office 2010 and I had just upgraded my OS from Snow Leopard to Lion. After the upgrade, I had observed that each time I open my MS Word/Excel, it keeps opening those previous file that I had opened before.

How can i stop this? I hope to revert to the old times where each time i open Word/Excel, it would be a new document and NOT it automatically open those previous files.

Pls advise.

Thank-You

Roy

I'm having similar issues. If I'm using Word, if I close Document A (but don't close Word), then open Document B, Document A opens again at the same time as Document B.

Or if I DO close Word, and then open any document from, say, the desktop or from a folder, it opens not only that document, but the previous one I'd been working on as well.

This is really stupid. It's driving me nuts. The only time it doesn't happen (I think) is if I open Word first, and then open the document from within there.

I don't want to uncheck 'Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps' because I *like* it restoring windows in Safari.

Yep .... I'm finding this very frustrating as well and can't figure out why apple doesn't allow you to just turn this off? There's the simple annoyance factor of my little air screen filling up with every file i had opened yesterday. But beyond that, I do a lot of presenting, and now I'm paranoid of what the system is going to open. When opening Numbers, for example, is it going to pop up my household budget ... another client's budget ... or the actual file I clicked on.

I'm sure there are work arounds ... but why do we have to use workarounds?

Just strange.

I joked to someone that Apple is now cursed because with every problem we'll say "Jobs would never have allowed this to happen."

But ... that is what I'm thinking more and more .... the tiny little scroll bars you can't grab now ... and they frustratingly disappear ....

Funny ....

Two observations: 1) There seems to be no solution to this problem. I've tried all recommended solutions (except rewriting code), and as is the case with many other posters, they don't work. 2) People who post solutions here don't seem to read what others are saying the problem is. Many folks post "uncheck 'Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps'." But that's what most people, including me, say doesn't work. It's not helpful to offer a solution to a problem when the person raising the problem says your proposed solution doesn't work

Thanks! This did the trick for me!

I'm on a Mac 10.7.3 using Microsoft Office 2011. Every time I opened a Word document, then quit out of application, and double-clicked to open a different Word document, it would also open up the previous document. I've had this problem for a while now so I appreciate you posting this solution 🙂

I was having the same issue. I tried:

System preferences

General

At the bottom uncheck "restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps"

But, it then would not open my Finder windows and it all became very annoying. Instead, I selected

System Preferences

General

"None" for Documents. Now, the rest of my windows open regularly and my Word docs that don't keep popping up.

Thanks for that! I unchecked the "Restore windows" box, and for the most part it worked...except with Excel and Word. It would continue to reopen old documents. Only Word and Excel were giving me problems with this (a Microsoft product being difficult, I'll try and hide my shock). But after doing this, Word and Excel started behaving.
