Restore bounce to Mail in Lion

Hi,

Does anyone know of a tweak or 3rd party program / patch to restore the bounce button capability?

It seems like I found a possible work around this morning that added the bounce function back via a tweak of the Mark Message as Junk button, but my first attempt at implementing it did not work and I can't find that thread again.

Thanks much!

Thomas A Reed & Ernie Stamper,

Thanks, but we're not interested in whether you think we should want the feature back, whether you think we should use the feature, or whether you think the feature works for us. If we were, the OP would have phrased his question accordingly. It might have looked something like this:

Hi,

Mail 5.0 in Lion removed the "Bounce" feature. I used to use it all the time. Should I not have been using it? Should I want it back?

Thanks much!

Of course, that's not what the original question was, was it? No, the OP wanted to know if there was a third-party option for bringing that feature back. That was the question: If you don't have an answer to any question that was actually asked, kindly keep your moot points to yourself.

As for the Automator/Services/Applescript workaround that was posted by someone who actually bothered to answer the question: I just confirmed that it does work, exactly as desired, in Mail 5.0 for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. I used one of my other email addresses to send, then used the workaround to bounce, and went back to the sending address... lo and behold, there was my bounce, and it was beautiful.

Furthermore, I can confirm that this is NOT because I have some old version of Mail or old library on my computer. I did NOT use Mail before Lion, because I did not like the old Mail app. Lion's Mail app is friggin' brilliant, and so I am using Apple's Mail app for the first time on this computer. And as I said, it works perfectly.

Folks, if you're wanting the old "Bounce" functionality, refer to charrison's instructions. They work brilliantly, and as dog opus mentioned, a keystroke shortcut can even be assigned.

Thanks to both of you guys.

Michael, thanks for the response!

But still the bounced option helped me for unwanted people and/or contacts (when they send prayers, powerpoints, promotional material, in general unwanted emails) to let them know that my email is not working in a polite way (when they get the notification that the email is experiencing problems). I preffer that than sending it to the JUNK all the time, because sometimes emails from those people and/or contacts are need it and I missed them because they go straight to junk.

And you are right about spammers not using real address but at least that helped the real owner of the email account to see that somebody is using it and look why they are getting a bounced emails or even cancel that account if they have been a victim.

Thanks for the useful comments from those who posted them. For those who complained we should use other things - I do - I use junk on *real* junk. But I often get mail from people who were emailing someone else (one of my addresses is a common one without a number after it, and tons of other people with similar names to mine have the same address but with a digit before the @). I use "bounce" to try to indicate to the senders that they were sending to the wrong person, without having to spend a bunch of time on a polite email to the effect that they messed up.

I tried your suggestion but couldn't get it to work. The only difference I noticed was I had to choose "Get Selected Mail Item" instead of your choice of "Get Selected Mail Messages" (which wasn't a choice). Otherwise, I thought I followed your directions. I know others have said it works so I figure I'm doing something stupid, but can't tell what. I tried running the script and not running the script. I even added the "delete eachMessage" command and didn't get that to work either. Any suggestions? TIA. Stuart

For those having problems implementing charrison's fix:

I'm posting a link to an Automator workflow that works. Click here to download it.

Once it is downloaded, you have four simple steps to complete:

  1. Find the file and double-click it. This will open the Workflow in Automator.
  2. Using the menus, select File > Duplicate To... . This will duplicate the workflow and give you the option of what format to save it in. Select Service as the new document type.
  3. At the top of your new Service document, set the following: Service receives no input in Mail. This is the only setting that you should have to change; everything else from the workflow file you downloaded from my link should be as it needs to be.
  4. Save. A small dialog will pop down asking you to name your service. That will be the only option. Name it, click Save, and you're done.

This should make it easier for those with no Applescript experience. There is no need for you to edit the Applescript. Simply download the file with the Applescript portion already written, open it, duplicate it so that you can save it as a Service, and save it.
