my hard drive is making a growling noise after updating to lion

I have the same problem in my iMac i7 27" with 1TB HDD.
I'd blame it on Lion creating fresh cache files every time programs are run initially... my hard drive's quited significantly since the first day of installing/using Lion.
same problem here. i seem to notice it more after a restart. hopefully this will be resolved in a lion update.
Maybe some one from apple support can shed some light on it, thats if they read these discussions. its also slower to wake from sleep
What you are hearing is spotlight indexing everything on your disk. Should calm down.
Before Lion upgrade my Mac Pro running Snow Leopard ran silently. Now with Lion I can definately hear more disk and fan noise.
Also wakes from sleep very slowly and sometimes falls straight back asleep before reaching the login page.
Very disappointed in Lion. Come back Snow Leopard all is forgiven...in fact I had no isues with you in the first place, so stupid me, thinking grass would be greener with a new version. Just like relationships, perhaps we only appreciate what we had when we fall for someone new who turns out to clearly has issues ;-p
Ref PeterB,
Quite right... and the computer should calm down after a while too. 😉
Regards
Richard
It's not Spotlight in my case, that task was completed on Wednesday last week after the upgrade. So I am fully indexed, and in what can be described steady state.
Lion install is still generating more noise than the same machine idling on Snow Leopard.
Its been over a week now since installing lion and my hard drive is still grumbling, every time i open an application or even scroll through web pages. My imac is only 2 weeks old, do you think i should take it back to the apple shop and ask for a replacement?. I would just like to reiterate that there was no such noise from snow leopard
I have the same problem on my iMac corei5, 2.66ghz with 4 gb ram and 1tb disk (with plenty amounds of free space).
Unless spotlight can use more than 100 hours on indexing - this is not the problem.
I called apple support today, they told me to turn off computer and unplug, then hold down the power button for 30 seconds, then plug back in, hold down alt, cmd and the letter R with your left hand, then turn on the computer, then hold down letter P straight after you push the power button, the mac will chime 3 times then let go all buttons. they told me it resets the power parrameters. My mac is a lot quieter since i done this the grumbling has not completely gone but its alot better. they said take it back to an apple shop if i'm still not happy, and they will replace the hard drive.
I take it all back its not quite any more its back to being noisy, it only lasted one day
Im having the same problem with a recently purchased 27" iMac with a 1TB drive.
Just called support, and have an apointment at store in a couple of days.
I also am having the same issue. I have the 27"iMac 2TB HD mid 2011 model. Just got it a week ago. The hard drive is quite noise grumbling like others have described. Also I noticed that waking up from sleep it's slower than my lepord machine. Sometimes I get teh spining wheel for 5-10 seconds. Other times login screen is there. But what ends up happening is as I start typing my password it lags. Scrolling in Safaro or iphoto again you can hear the HD grumble. Is this a Lion issue or a Hard drive issue? Fromt the posts above I am going to assume it maybe lion related but I think one of the post had a new iMac with Lion preinstalled. So not sure if it's hard drive vs. software. I am planning on making a call to apple care and see what they say. If no solution this machine is going back to Apple. Interestingly though when I was at the Apple store on multiple occasions I do not recall the slow response or HD noise. Then again it's quite noise at the Apple stores making it difficult to hear unless you hold your ear next to the machine and listen. But ther is no way I am lugging this 27" beast to the Genius Bar for them to do a reset or whatever they do and send me home. Anyone else receive any problems? Anyone not having this probelm?
AppleCare provides on-site repair service for iMacs if you live within 50 miles of an Apple Store.
Keep that in mind in case you do need repairs.
