Volume control problem in Lion

MBP 13" mid 2010 (7.1) just installed a fresh copy of Lion. After reboot volume control does not work (audio device - which is internal speakers - has no controls), but there is sound. After inserting headphones the volume control starts working, and remains functional after removing the headphones.

Basically after each reboot I have to temporary plug headphones to get volume control working. Nothing in dmesg or system.log

I'm familiar with linux so if you tell me how to debug this I'll happily do it, not afraid at all of command line or searching through logs.

(and you'd think that having control both over hardware and software would prevent such frustrating problems)

Hi, I've had the same problem.

I changed volume level at the same time I disconnected the headphones..

my solution :

terminal:

sudo -i

"enter your password"

as root :

launchctl stop com.apple.audio.coreaudiod

launchctl start com.apple.audio.coreaudiod

notice, if any programs are open and may have a hook to the sound driver, it may crash (my garagband did)

the sound works perfectly afterwards.

I have a Macbook Pro 17" (end 2009), run lion for some weeks now and never noticed the audio issue, because audio seemed to work. Until I tried to record my jazz band yesterday live, connecting a Saffire Pro 40 and had to change the audio input in Booemrecorder whose audioprefs showed nothing to choose. The system prefs panel's audio input and output showed "no system audio" too. Fifteen minutes before we had to start I tried all suggestions made here (deleting prefs, repairing permissions, editing system plist file), with no effect.

Today I read this topic to the end and bjarnehr's post was the resolution for me.

Thank you!

I'm am really screwed. Pls help and even call me by phone.

I tried to edit the file /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist

but I think i messed up at the file new has another extension like /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist.txt

I don't know how to change it. I only use graphic interfaces and never terminal.

Hence the file is missing I can't start my computer anymore. I stalls at the white screen with the grey logo and the timer below.

I tried to make a safe reboot with no luck (cmd + shift) at startup.

What do I do?
