Why won't Safari quit on Lion?

This has happened twice now - White Macbook 13-inch, mid-2010. OS X 10.7 Lion installed, along with the most current version of Safari and latest software update. Safari has refused to quit. Command-Q won't work, and the Safari menu has the 'Quit Safari' button grayed out. Computer refuses to restart or shut down until Safari quits, which will not happen when you click 'Shut Down' or 'Restart'. The only way to quit safari is to hit Option-Command-Escape, which brings up the Force Quit menu. Took this problem to the Apple Store Genius Bar, and all they did was force quit it and report the problem to Apple - but something tells me that they're not going to do much about it. What can I do to avoid this happening?

Just thought I'd add my name to the growing list of victims. I am a new Mac user and I too recently experienced this unpleasant phenomenon. I have a brand spanking new Macbook Pro i7 13" running Lion OS X v 10.7.2 and I was sadly not savvy with the 'force quit' method and so was forced eventaully to force my lovely machine to shut down by holding down the power button ⚠ I have checked Safari in the Appllications window and 32 bit was not selected, so I know therfore that that will not be a solution for me, should this occur again. I'm watching with interest for any update/patch or whatever that fixes this bug, hope it's soon!

Its interesting how I have yet to see someone test this issue in a new admin user.

Perhaps concise steps are needed:

1. Open System Preferences.

2. Click on "Users & Groups"

3. Unlock the padlock at the bottom with your current admin password.

4. Click the "+" button at the bottom of the list of users.

5. Choose to create a new admin user with ANY username + Password combination.

6. Close System Preferences.

7. Click the Apple logo at the top left and choose "Log Out (your username here)

8. Click the newly created user.

9. Test Safari.

These steps are HUGELY beneficial to diagnosing this issue.

In your effected user:

1. Make sure Safari is quit.

2. Pull the following folder to your desktop:

~/Library/Safari/ (~ = your home folder)

3. Open Safari and test the issue.

If the issue is not resolved:

A. Force Quit Safari

B. Delete the Safari folder that recreated in ~/Library/

C. Put the Safari folder from your Desktop back in your ~/Library/

Please reply with results...

Excellent!

The Safari folder now on your desktop contains a "Bookmarks.plist" file, this contains your bookmarks, you may want to consider:

1. Quitting Safari.

Deleting the following file:

~/Library/Safari/Bokmarks,plist

2. Drag and drop the Bookmarks.plist file from your desktop to replace the file just deleted.

3. Open Safari to verify its functionality with the bookmarks, make sure it still quits correctly.

Other than the bookmarks file the Safari folder on your desktop can be safely deleted.

I've been trying to get someone to test in a new user for 6 months with this thread, its nice to finally have someone willing, and check it out, we found a resolution!

I don't understand why, but simply copying the safari folder to my desktop fixed the problem. I then just deleted the folder from my desktop. It was a beast finding the library folder though since apple doesn't let you browse to it. Had to find it using a 3rd party app called EasyFind.

As a longtime windows user I continue to be baffled by how weird the problems and solutions are on my Mac. However I've been able to pretty much resolve them all and my computer doesn't slow to a crawl after a year of use like nearly 20 years of Windows machines have. Parallels gives me access to the few things I need Windows for - e.g. a usable version of any Intuit software.
