Transferring protected WMA audiobooks to iTunes/iPhone using OverDrive Media Console

Hi there,

My local library is now offering audiobooks. I have downloaded one, that went fine - I have the file and can listen to it. The problem is that I can't seem to transfer the WMA Audiobook to my iPhone using this software they provided (OverDrive Media Console), even though their website says that it can be transferred to apple devices (including my iPhone) and the library site says that this particular audiobook is permitted to be transferred to apple devices (including the iPhone).

When I try to Transfer using the OverDrive Media Console, I get this error:

"The OverDrive Media Console Transfer Wizard is not able to connect to iTunes. If you intend to transfer content to the iTunes Library and/or a supported Apple device, please note that iTunes v9.0.2 (or newer) is required. iTunes is available as a free download from Apple; visit http://www.apple.com/itunes/download to download iTunes. If your system meets this requirement, please close any open iTunes dialog boxes then attempt to transfer again."

I have read that others have had the problem, but there are few solutions emerging, from what I can see anyway.

I have went to this website (http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/indivsite) in my Internet Explorer browser and upgraded the Windows Media Player security version. OverDrive says my security upgrade version is 2.9.0.1.

My iTunes is up to date as far as I know. iTunes 10.4.0.80. Perhaps the recent update is something to do with this problem? I don't know. I am using Windows 7, and the OverDrive Media Console version is 3.2.0.5.

I have changed my iPhone settings to "Manually manage music and videos", as OverDrive requests this.

When I try to put these protected WMA Audiobook files into my Automatically Add to iTunes folder, I get an error message saying:

"One or more of the songs being added are in the protected WMA format, including the song "examplesongname01.wma", and could not be converted.

iTunes can only convert unprotected WMA songs. If you have the original CDs for these songs, you can import them using iTunes."

I have restarted iTunes, OverDrive Media Console, and my computer countless times. My home network sharing is turned off; I mention it as I saw someone had suggested that as a solution.

The two suggested solutions I haven't tried yet are:

- convert them to MP3

- uninstall and reinstall iTunes & OverDrive Media Console again.

I don't really want to uninstall iTunes. I have a lot of music and audiobooks; it takes half aday for iTunes to load them all up again. As for converting to MP3s; I don't know if this is legal. Plus, I don't know if these protected DRM files can be converted like that.

Ok, well I hope someone else was in the same boat & solved it. Otherwise it'd be a real shame if we couldn't get these protected WMA audiobooks onto our iPhones.

Hope you can help.

Thanks.

I'm about ready to give up. I have uninstalled and then reinstalled iTunes; uninstalled and reinstalled OMC; upgraded the Windows Media Player Security twice; Deleted and redownloaded the audiobook itself. Nothing works. iTunes is not syncing the book to my iPhone 4 (with IOS 5). when I click on the "books" folder on the sidebar under my device, it shows each chapter but it has a number not a name. Rather than "syncing" while transferring the book like it used to, in the top bar of iTunes, it says "converting XXX" XXX being a number. But even the numbered files don't make it to my iPhone -- or, if they do, I can't find them.

I wish I had never upgraded iTunes or my iPhone. I really don't want to pay whatever fee apple charges for a support phone call that may or may not help anyway. Everything else seems to work -- I am at a total loss.😕

Just figured that these weird numbered chapters/parts of the audio book from OMC, show up in that order if you have Audible app. Check in "iPod Library" tab. I just downloaded a book and the random numbered parts viz., 6650, 6725, etc show up in audible app "iPod library" section (you should enable 'Show iPod audiobooks' in settings for audible) and I can play.

Such a shame that OMC did not QE iOS 5 sync. Hope some OMC engineers working actively to fix this issue. For now, something is better than nothing :-)!

I am also having problems with Overdrive. Because so many of the books are licensed for PC only I set up bootcamp and installed Windows on my computer so that I could download more titles. Before purchasing my iPhone 4 I was able to transfer books to my iPod. Last night I tried to transfer a book to my iPhone and got the message about turning on Manually manage, but the problem is I don't want to Sync to the PC side of my computer. All my music etc is on the Mac side. Is there any way around this. I have no trouble downloading the Mac licensed audio books, just the PC. I tried turning the manually manage and erased and synced the iPhone from the PC side. Of course it worked but was deleted when I resynced to the Mac side.

Any suggestions?

I got it to work! This worked on my first gen i-Pad. In Itunes on the PC go to preferences, and chose "Device" and check "Prevents from synching automatically" now just transfer with the ODMC. Now go to Itunes, create a play list on the device, now copy/drag drop the book from audiobooks to your new play list. Disconnect and it shows up. And of course you can rename the file so its not just those silly numbers.

This didn't work for me as my problem is I don't have my iPhone synced to this version of iTunes. I have it synced to my Mac side. All I want to do is use ODM to transfer the files directly to my iPhone. I was able to do this with my iPod and am wondering if it is the new software on the iPhone. I needs me to turn manually maganage music on in itunes and when I do this I have to sync my iphone to that itunes library. The only reason I set up bootcamp and windows on my mac was to download the PC licenced ipod compatible books to my iPhone (iPod). I have no problems using ODM on my Mac side, I can either transfer directly or drag and drop to my itunes. Of course if I try to drag and drop to the PC side of my iTunes I get an error message saying they are protected.

Just discovered the problem, but also found the answer here! After copying and pasting to the playlist I named the same as the book title and renaming each chapter, I am now able to listen again. If you add 'download date' in the iTunes list, you can see when each chapter downloaded by time and rename them accordingly. The next step was to go back to the library site that I downloaded the book from and copy the book cover image and paste it into all of the chapters in my playlist. I did it all at once by selecting all of them. I used the largest book cover image size I could find and now I get an even better image on my iPhone (iOS5) than I did previously. Thanks for the tip! As one of other contributors said, I really missed listening to a book on my commute to and from work....

I'm going to post this in 3 places... here, another discussion I've been in, and I'm going to start a new discussion so as many people as possible will get the answer. Overdrive came up with a fix !!!!! A gentleman posting on Overdrive's Facebook page said he received an email from them stating that they had a solution. Download the upgrade to OMC from the Overdrive website. The books will transfer but they create a new Playlist. They are no longer shown in Audiobooks. I went to the Overdrive site -- there is absolutely NO mention of an upgrade or a fix to their problem with IOS 5, but I decided to download anyway. Sure enough, it works. Overdrive will create a new playlist for each audiobook and they play! No more funky numbers and while I haven't gone from one section to another, it should play smoothly between sections. The book art is back. We are back in business finally !!!!
