Transferring protected WMA audiobooks to iTunes/iPhone using OverDrive Media Console

Hi there,

My local library is now offering audiobooks. I have downloaded one, that went fine - I have the file and can listen to it. The problem is that I can't seem to transfer the WMA Audiobook to my iPhone using this software they provided (OverDrive Media Console), even though their website says that it can be transferred to apple devices (including my iPhone) and the library site says that this particular audiobook is permitted to be transferred to apple devices (including the iPhone).

When I try to Transfer using the OverDrive Media Console, I get this error:

"The OverDrive Media Console Transfer Wizard is not able to connect to iTunes. If you intend to transfer content to the iTunes Library and/or a supported Apple device, please note that iTunes v9.0.2 (or newer) is required. iTunes is available as a free download from Apple; visit http://www.apple.com/itunes/download to download iTunes. If your system meets this requirement, please close any open iTunes dialog boxes then attempt to transfer again."

I have read that others have had the problem, but there are few solutions emerging, from what I can see anyway.

I have went to this website (http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/indivsite) in my Internet Explorer browser and upgraded the Windows Media Player security version. OverDrive says my security upgrade version is 2.9.0.1.

My iTunes is up to date as far as I know. iTunes 10.4.0.80. Perhaps the recent update is something to do with this problem? I don't know. I am using Windows 7, and the OverDrive Media Console version is 3.2.0.5.

I have changed my iPhone settings to "Manually manage music and videos", as OverDrive requests this.

When I try to put these protected WMA Audiobook files into my Automatically Add to iTunes folder, I get an error message saying:

"One or more of the songs being added are in the protected WMA format, including the song "examplesongname01.wma", and could not be converted.

iTunes can only convert unprotected WMA songs. If you have the original CDs for these songs, you can import them using iTunes."

I have restarted iTunes, OverDrive Media Console, and my computer countless times. My home network sharing is turned off; I mention it as I saw someone had suggested that as a solution.

The two suggested solutions I haven't tried yet are:

- convert them to MP3

- uninstall and reinstall iTunes & OverDrive Media Console again.

I don't really want to uninstall iTunes. I have a lot of music and audiobooks; it takes half aday for iTunes to load them all up again. As for converting to MP3s; I don't know if this is legal. Plus, I don't know if these protected DRM files can be converted like that.

Ok, well I hope someone else was in the same boat & solved it. Otherwise it'd be a real shame if we couldn't get these protected WMA audiobooks onto our iPhones.

Hope you can help.

Thanks.

Thanks for posting that Overdrive has a fix albeit a temporary fix. I downloaded the latest version and was able to transfer a book but it took a lot of cleanup to get it to show up and be ready to play on my ipod touch. Only 2 of the 11 tracks had track numbers so 9 of the parts did not show up in the playlist. I edited them and added the track numbers then had to reorder the parts in the playlist from 1-11. This "fix" is obviously just a workaround until they have a new release. My guess is they are not advertising the update yet because it is a kludge.

Thank you this was extremely helpful. Also needed the comment about transferring the books from books to playlists. However, I do not see how to stop reading a book in the middle of a section and pick up immediately where you left off, as you could do in Audiobooks. Also, it has a shuffle function in playlist, which of course makes no sense. Is there a workaround for stopping reading mid section, listening to something else, and finding where you left off again?

My problem was with both MP3 and WMA audiobooks. Overdrive would put them on my IPOD but I couldn't access them. They were in a file preceded witha backslash. Based on what others contributed I removed and reinstalled Itunes and then did the same with Overdrive. I can now get both MP3 and WMA recorded. The MP3 are put into Music and the WMA go into Playlists.(I am a Windows 7 user.)

kamloopsian -- How is your solution working out? Your plan is my plan. I just got a macbook pro, but, the main thing I do on my old computer is download WMA books from the library and put them on my iPhone 4. My plan was to install Parallels for windows and Windows 7 -- but only use Windows for downloading WMA files in the windows overdrive media console and iTunes in windows to synch to my phone. I would love to find a better solution, but I don't know if there is one. I am worried about what issues I will encounter and if I'll be able to take advantage of synching over the air in Windows (I haven't upgraded my phone or itunes software because my old computer didn't have the space for it). I was pondering putting my iTunes library on Time Machine and seeing if I could open it from either operating system and synch from either, but it may end up trying to resynch my entire phone every time. Any ideas for me? How long have you had this set up running? Any advice would be appreciated. I can live with synching to iTunes on the Windows side if the book transfer works. I usually save my photos to an external hard drive for space reasons anyway, so I plan to do that on time machine then open them from mac iOS to edit. I am still considering returning the mac and getting a cheap PC and an iPad! 😟

I used bootcamp rather than purchasing parallel and then I purchased windows. As long as I didn't want it to sync to my mac side it worked quite well. Actually at first it let me use Overdrive to download directly to my ipod without having to sync but for some reason recently when I try to set itunes to manually manage music it wants to sync my ipod. I didn't upgrade any software so I have no Idea what changed. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response! Last night I installed Paralells, Windows, Overdrive Media Console on Windows, and then was able to download my book in WMA format. I was hoping I could sync to iTunes on the Mac and have Overdrive recognize that I had iTunes open, but I had to choose Windows or Mac when connecting my phone through the USB and had to choose Windows in order for it to successfully transfer. I was able to get it to work, but as you said, it is now synced to iTunes in Windows. The nice thing was that it pulled in all my music/apps that I had set up in the Mac side, so I didn't have to go through that exercise again. I tested it on my old phone, which I now use as an iTouch for the kids, the battery has no life, so it primarily runs when plugged in. Now I need to decide if I want to set up my current phone on Windows or Mac. If I do windows, I can't take advantage of the cloud or iphoto/imovie directly. I'm totally new to mac, but I think I'll have to import my photos manually. I've never synched to a mac, so I don't really know what I'm missing.

I don't understand how to do this

3. Highlight the mobile device in the left hand menu of iTunes and insure the "Manually manage music and videos" box is checked in the Summary Tab. If the mobile device storage is full, transfering will delete that portion of music necessary for the ebook.

I can't find this in any left hand menu of itunes

Hi,

You highlight the mobile device. This puts the main screen of iTunes in the mobile device summary tab (or it does for me, you may need to highlight the summary tab). Then you scroll down on what is now the main iTunes screen and near the bottom, right hand side, there is a button for "manually manage music and videos". By the way, it never deletes music for me to add an audiobook through WMA audiobooks; it just tells me there's no more space.

I find that lately Overdrive has been creating the books in "playlists", in case you get stuck after you've transferred the audiobook to your mobile device and open the "audiobooks" part of your mobile device and can't find it.

Good luck
