Problems copying files in Lion?

I'm having some strange issues copying files in Lion on a fresh install. I drag files from one drive to another, and the files seem to copy- the progress dialog comes up, the "ghost" files show up in the destination window, the copying takes about as long as one would expect for the file size, but upon ending, nothing... the file disappears from the destination. This has happened both on a USB external hard drive and on my NAS which is hooked up via Gigabit Ethernet. Copying via cp in Terminal works just fine, though. Any ideas?

I have the same issue. I try to copy video files from my Imac to USB drive and most of the time they end up as ghost files. I can see them though, but when I try to open them I've got message telling me that the file is used by mac OS X and can't be open. On the other hand, when I try to copy a file from the USB HD to the mac, the copy process seems to work normally, but when finished, the file is invisible, vanished!

To my opinion, it seems to be a serious bug as this situation is reported againand again on many forums

Copying files from one machine to another via wifi is super slow. Apple pls fix all these issue. I also posted up that copyig music to my iTunes have greyed out on the playlist but nothing is copying. It takes 2 or 3 times of different music and it finally registers and copies all three albums finally. But it happens often...it could be the same issue as described on this thread - that my iTunes library is lcoated on an external drive. (fw800)

Same problem here.

Running on macbook, macbook pro and Mac Pro, and the problem is consistent on all machines.

90% of the time, the copy will fail.

Working, as Chrisjc suggested, with the terminal is a workaround, and if trying to copy between computers on a network, i suggest enabling ssh and using a program like Cyberduck, to manage filetransfers, via sftp.

This is so far one of the biggest blunders from Apple in a long time.

How can an operating system, on revision 10.7 display so many problems with something as simple as file copy?

Yes, I'll add myself to the people having this problem. My husband and I have a 1TB hard drive with movies connected to our PS3, and the other day I we wanted to add some more movies, and delete a folder, and we couldn't do either thing.

He tried to do it first, with his MacBook Pro and fresh Lion install, and couldn't do it. Then, I tried to do it with my MacBook Pro with my fresh Lion install, and guess what, I couldn't do it either. I did manage to get the file we wanted to delete into my trashbin though, but then I realized that he wanted to sve the files on that folder, so I tried to get the file back on the hard drive, but it wouldn't get out of the trash bin, and then I tried to get the file on my desktop, and it didn't budge either.

What's this all about???? I hope Apple fixes this SOON!!

I've had the same issue as well in at least three different cases:

- copying a file from a USB drive to the Finder desktop;

- alt-dragging the proxy icon in the title bar of a document opened in Preview to the desktop;

- copying a file from a local disk to a network disk.

In one of the cases (the first) I've been able to copy the file using Path Finder instead of the Finder app.

In the second case I've managed to "duplicate" the file and saving the new "version" to the desktop.

But, of course, it's not really acceptable to have a bug like that.
