Problems copying files in Lion?

I'm having some strange issues copying files in Lion on a fresh install. I drag files from one drive to another, and the files seem to copy- the progress dialog comes up, the "ghost" files show up in the destination window, the copying takes about as long as one would expect for the file size, but upon ending, nothing... the file disappears from the destination. This has happened both on a USB external hard drive and on my NAS which is hooked up via Gigabit Ethernet. Copying via cp in Terminal works just fine, though. Any ideas?

I have a problem that might be related to this one. When I upgraded to Lion everything was fine but then I used the recovery patition to format my hdd and make a fresh install. Now copying files to encrypted disk images is extremely slow (~10 min for 100mb), the hdd also makes a lot of noise during the copy. Please let me know if You have also this problem or know a solution to it.

glenndk.

You have tried this? Because it seems as though it does not work according to the following posters in that thread, they have not found it to work or to be useful.

If you don't have the answer I thnk it would be more helpful to people seeking help if you can post things like "check this thread" or "I have done this myself" not "Please follow these instructions" it is very misleading.

If you have done this then please post your results here and share them. 🙂

I just changed all my computing to MAC (office, home, laptop). Thousands of dollars to get an experience that is better than windows 7 and I am unable to do a simple copy and paste! This has been going on for some time and apple has not fixed it. Unbelievable! Considering going back to Windows...sadly

Believe me, going back to Windows is not an option.

I have solved the copy-paste-problem completely on both of my machines by uninstalling software obviously incompatible with Lion. In my case it was "Xee.app's" fault. I copied GBs of files during the weekend and did not have one single problem any more.

I am sure - as by far not everyone has that problem - third party software is causing this issue. So it's not Lion's fault directly. Keep in mind that an OS upgrade is never really seemless regarding legacy software.

I think not blaming third party apps that haven't upgraded for Lion compatibility is unfair to Apple. I would advise for you to clean out your hard drive and reinstall Lion again. See if the problem persists. Then only install upgraded "ready for Lion" apps. Only install to one user and create a new guest user if problems persist to test wihout those apps. You will know which app is clashing if you install apps one at a time and test the copy and paste. Are you using a uSB drive? Are issues of copying only on USB drives? Does the copy paste work if it's folders in the finder? (internal drive) if you are having external drive copy and backup issues try using the FireWire port and a drive which can support FireWire since it works.

Same copy problem here, and I have a "clean" Mac at work. No funny third party apps, or homemade network drives. I can not certain filetypes or maybe it is folder sizes to network volumes such as iDisk (MobileMe) or USB drives. It does not matter wether it is FAT32 or HFS+ formatted.

APPLE; PLEASE FIX! I am not upgrading any of my other Macs until this and other bugs in Lion are fixed - this is not good enough. Snow Leopard ftw!

When you upgrade the OS, it's not unique to Apple that some applications cause some troubles.

I am also running MS Office 2011 and can tell you that it doesn't cause the file copy issue. However, I am not so sure regarding Parallels desktop. I tried Parallels desktop several times (I unfortunately bought a copy of it) but finally switched to Fusion as Parallels caused lots of troubles on my machines. Don't want to think of having Parallels on Lion - it's clear that it can't be better than on Snow Leopard.

So, I wouldn't blame anyone for that problem. It is a fact that there are lots of users without this file copy issue - and that there are useres being able to fix the problem by uninstalling third party apps (like me). In my opinion, Snow Leopard's quality up to version 10.6.2 was distinctly worse than Lion's quality. At that time I finally downgraded to 10.5 as Time Machine didn't work at all and I had lots of stability and performance issues. I have been using Macs for several years and am sure that Snow Leopard was definitely the worst release of an OS Apple made since the first versions of OS X.

I am a VERY experienced Mac and PC user, and I can tell you that on this Machine, it can be nothing but Apples own software causing the trouble. Also, I have to disagree on you when it comes to Snow Leopard: I now have a fairly new Mac with Snow Leopard, and hundreds of third party apps and mods, and it is very stable. The brand new Mac with LIon is far more unstable. True I have have loads of mail and files, but that has never been a Macs problem...at leats not since the MacOs days.

Also: Leopard, or MacOSX 10.2 are definently the finalists in the unstabality contest. Tiger was the one version that was rock solid!

I got the exact same problem!

At first I thought it was because of NTFS compatibility issue.. but then yesterday it happened while copying from a HFS+ HDD to my internal iMac HDD!

A simple Finder relaunch seems to solve the issue, but this is SUPER ANNOYING. Now I can't just blindly command+drag the file to cut and paste, I have to make sure they are properly copied first.

This is an unacceptable bug and a huge blow to Lion.

Aug 16, 2011 1:03 AM in response to Cortado

Cortado, just to make on thing clear: I haven't said that SL was unstable in general. I wrote that it was until version 10.6.3. 10.6.0 was definitely a release more or less unusable in a productive environment and much worse than 10.7.0. However, Snow Leopard evolved and finally became the best Apple OS ever. It isn't a new experience that newly released software has bugs. If you want to have a stable system, you shoudn't upgrade until x.x.2 or x.x.3 has been released.
