Scan is all black even though pre-scan okay

I am attempting to scan B/W docs for eventual OCR by Acrobat, at 600 dpi (because sometimes small print requires it).

No matter which settings I use, scan to text, to black & white, etc., scan to tiff or pdf, the final result is an all-black page.

Any suggestions?

That confused me a bit as well, at first. In earlier versions I could open Acrobat, choose "Import from Scanner" (or something like that) and the scanner would scan directly into a new document window in Acrobat.

However, now, (since the Acrobat scan import doesn't work), when I open Preview and choose "Import from scanner," the scan dialog opens and sllows me to set what I want, and then when I click "Scan" a dialog box is presented to choose a location to save the file. And when scan is finished the new document is open in Preview.

So, it's somewhat similar, at least on my set-up.

I don't see a solution here. I have a HP photosmart 5515 connected via wireless to my Mac running Lion (10.7.5)

It scan pictures fine so I know the driver fundamentally works.

However scanning two pages to a single PDF always resulted in a black PDF document. So it looks like the fault is in the bit of code that converts a scan to a PDF - scanning images is fine.

I have done both custom image size and setting to A4 - with the same result.

The only solution I have found is to boot my Windows 7 machine and use the scan to PDF facility there - although that driver has no concept of doing pages. But at least it doesn't save a black PDF document which is considerably better then what the Mac can offer.

I have ensured that I have the latest updates. So why do I have a black screen when scanning to PDF?

Jiri,

Great suggestion. Someone tossed an All-In-One Canon Pixma printer in the trash. I couldn't believe it. I assumed it didn't work. But I wondered. So I brought it into the house and downloaded the drivers and hooked it up. I was having some black pages too so I tried your suggestion of using the Apple Image Capture Utility and BANG! We got a pristine and accurate scan.

I couldn't believe the quality. Much better than Canon's driver, and I updated it to boot. I can see why the scans are black with the other driver too. The detail of the scan shows that the text from the other side of the document is just visible so Canon's driver is probably trying to reproduce the fine details but doesn't know how to interpret the information it's reading.

I am so perplexed as to why someone would throw a perfectly good Photo Printer/Scanner (with working wi-fi as well) into the trash. It even supports AirPrint. Now I can even print from my iPhone. I guess it was my lucky day.

Jiri, You get the Apple of the day award. 🙂

I have a problem with my Canon Lide 100 scanner and my Mac running 10.7.5. It happens intermittently. Any scans higher than 300 dpi will appear as solid black. It occurs whether I use Image Capture or Preview. Sometimes it goes away when I restart my machine. Sometimes, like today, it doesn't. It is clearly a software issue, as when I switched to my partner's mac (same model, running Yosemite), it worked fine. Not only that, but I saw the drop down menu allowed scans above 600dpi, which is the maximum I can use on mine when it works. Buggy drivers?

Does anyone know of a more stable image scanning utility that I can download for OS 10.5?
