Lion - no more "save as" in text edit

FWIW, in Mountain Lion 'Save As' is available in TextEdit.

I'm stumped. Where is it?

Click on page 6 and see my response at the top. It says "Lion" as the subject, but it also works for Mountain Lion.

I'll be ****** if I have to install an older version of TextEdit. I paid $3000 for my iMAC/Mountain Lion and I expect better.

Do you want TextEdit to work as you expect, or not? All you have to do is copy TextEdit from a Mac running Snow Leopard onto your Mac and delete the Mountain Lion version.

It has to do with Autosave and Versions. These are functions built into the OS since Lion, but only apps written to recognize and use those functions will perform that way. TextEdit from SL knows nothing about these functions and so completely ignores them.

Adobe also ignores these functions, with the exception of Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements. In order to be allowed in the App Store, they must support those functions. But they also aren't forced to be the only option. Both Adobe titles allow you to turn Autosave/Versions off in its preferences. When you do that, Save As returns to the menus and Autosave/Versions is disabled.

You can also set the preferences in Mountain Lion so everything acts like Snow Leopard. Save As… returns to Command+Shift+S, windows and apps don't relaunch or reopen themselves; Duplicate is pushed off the shortcut keys; files don't save without your consent when you close them with unsaved changes.

Much backlash from Lion users about the loss of Save As… and files saving by themselves, even if you didn't want them to, brought this workflow back, but not in a way that's easy to find. You have to know where to look and what to change. See this page to see how.

I'm using TextEdit v. 1.8, which I believe is the version that comes with Mountain Lion. To access "Save As" in it, press the Option key and the "Duplicate" item in the File menu will become "Save As...".

You can also just press Command-Option-Shift-S

"Duplicate" function followed by "Rename" does what "Save As" did in one.

For MY purposes, it works better. I can see how it would be less convenient for almost everybody else on teh planet.

Apple: Bring back "Save As". The on-screen cloning is cute, but Apple's first rule has been "it works."

P.S. Once you rename a Textedit, clicking away shoudl save the new title. As it is, you must press return/enter to save the new name. File name changes don't work this way, so consistency would be a pleasant tweak.

A lot better then trying to remember what keystrokes show it, or do it.

Seriously? I have been using the Mac for well over 20 years. This is the first time I have had to look for documentation on how to USE Text Edit. Taking away the ability to quickly and easily save a copy of a document is a HUGE misstep. I hope Apple comes across this thread and fixes this. (I don't think I should have to restore Save As).

I just got into a Mac os after a few years, and find the super-geniuses at apple corp make some decisions like these that are inconsistent with how the rest of the world operates. I opened a text file by default with Xcode and it just plain disappeared on me after i exited ? Isn't that special. What an idiotic concept
