Unable to update bundled iMove/iPhoto/GarageBand?

I purchased a new Air yesterday. Right out the box the App Store shows 3 updates available, one each for the bundled iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand.

When I go to update them via the App Store I get a dialog that "You must have previously purchased the item being updated. Tap buy to purchase it now".

Of course if I try to do this it won't let me, I get another error "Purchase of this item is not currently available. The item is being modified. Please try again later".

The updates don't show in regular Software Update, and if I download the standalone updaters from Apple's support site the installer says they can't be installed and to use the App Store.

I seem to be going around in circles. Has anyone any suggestions please?

I emailed the app store support and they said they couldn't help me and to call applecare. I called applecare and they seemed completely unaware of the issue. The ended up connecting me with a supervisor who had me send in my computer info and they would send it to the engineers to figure out. I also directed him to this discussion to show that it is not an isolated incident.

Just got off the phone to Applecare, spoke to someone who suggested the solution would be just to get the iTunes team to "associate" the iLife apps with my account. Which seems to be common sense to me.

After that I spoke to a senior advisor, who asked me to send in screenshots of the App store showing the various error messages. He then spoke to "the engineers" and told me that they are aware of the problem and are working on it.

There is hope for us yet 🙂

If you make a Time Machine backup of your Mac, then you cannot loose anything. Backups will be a very important step for folks to take if they intend to be part of Apple's future. I think Apple is taking the hard steps to force folks to do what they should have been doing all along. Even if it means alienating some and angering others. Those willing to learn the new survival skills will be Apple's future users.

You should have heard the rukus 10 years ago when Macs came out with no floppy drives, just an optical drive. This is the next step into the future of the electronic frontier.

Good idea. I have 6.5TB of storage on my Mac Pro and it's only with the purchase of the MacBook Air that I've finally deleted a couple of TB of, basically rubbish I didn't need anymore (I'm a bit of a hoarder lol) to make room for Time Machine backups for both the Mac Pro and MacBook Air.

I'm currently reinstalling Lion on the MacBook Air, it says it has 33 minutes to go. Roll on the upgrade to 30Mb/s broadband on Friday lol.

I'll post back here when it's finished and let you know if it fixed the problem.
