Target Display Mode MBA (2011,11") -> iMac (2010,27")

I am unable to set up Target Display Mode between my nice new MBA (2011,11") to my iMac (2010,27") using a Belkin MiniDisplay - MiniDisplay cable.

I assume this functionality must require a Thunderbolt cable. Any confirmation?

After a lot of googling and experimenting, I finally got this to work:

Source: MacBook Air 13", late 2010 with Mini Display Port, running OS X 10.7.5

Target: iMac 27", mid 2010 with Mini Display Port, running OS X 10.7.5

1. Apple's Thunderbolt cable does NOT work, despite the staff at my local Apple store said so.

2. Belkin's Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable WORKS.

3. In my case, there's no need to press CMD + F2.

4. Turned on both Macs, connected the Belkin cable, the iMac screen immediately becomes an external display of my MacBook Air.

Hooray!

Nice solution belleliu. I wish Apple could be more explanatory about the Mini Display port.

I am utterly confused whether the Mini Display port is bidirectional? Some questions:

1 The Mini Display port is BIDIRECTIONAL? No. Apparently it can only receive data FROM the attached item in TDM?

2 However, when coupled to a Display Port which is bidirectional it will only receive Display Port data in TDM mode since Mini Display port cannot output data?

The Mini Display port is not compatible with Thunderbolt?

There are other anomalies like adaptors for HDMI/VGA/DVI and whether they output data or allow input, but that's another problem.
