I have tried to login with the login name and password but it says that login failed and reboots.

I have tried resetting the password from my mac os cd but still no luck.

is there anyway to change it so that it boot back to the gui mode?

Hi,

I have read most of the forum that was discussed regarding about the darwin/bsd screen. I still can not find the solution to solving my problem.

After using the Disk Warrior disc as a startup to fix the directory, and restarting the computer. It startup from the Disk Warrior disc again. After i took out the disc, this is when the darwin/bsd screen appears.
I had tried the following:
pressing OPTION KEY while it boots up, still wont recognize the HD
pressing C KEY while it boots up, still wont recognize the HD
pressig the SHIFT key while it boots up, still wont recognize the HD

Also, I had misplaced my disk utility disc..

can someone tell me how to resolve this situation..

Hey Michael
Ok I'm getting this same darwin thing. My laptop will start to boot, go to the blue screen with the little spinning disk, then take me to the darwin login. From your past posts around I have entered in

tail -20 /var/log/system.log

Now I see the "loginwindow[386]:exiting to console" and these lines are above it.

DirectoryService[230]: DS (SLP) couldn't registar Tim Machidabs Computer (afp) due to an error: 57!
loginwindow[386]:Could not allocate LoginAuthRefMgr instance.
loginwindow[386]: AuthorizationRef doesn't have a username ((null)).
loginwindow[386]: exiting to console

What I see wrong is that my computer name is not "tim machida'B's computer", there shouldn't be that B there. I am unfamiliar with darwin and would appreciate your help.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!!

It would have been better to start a new topic on this. This one is old enough to have slipped way down in "My Posts", so I only came upon your post by accident. Also your situation seems a little different.

Are you part of a network? Or are you getting this when trying to boot standalone? How long has this been going on? What changes had you made before it started?

At the Darwin prompt, are you able to log in with your usual name and password?

Start a new topic with the content of your post here plus the answers to my questions.

Help!
I have read the above posts and all apply to me. My machine will NOT respond to any of the commands. I have run Drive 10, Disk Warrior, Disk Utillity and started up in single user mode. Disk Utillity tries to repair the volume and gives me an "Invalid extent entry" message. I am able to boot in single user mode. I run the /sbin/fsck -y command and get the same error "Invalid extent entry"....what now? I have tried to do an "archive & install" but to no avail. I am on a very early G4 tower (PCI I think...). I am strmped. I have 2 partitions on the drive as well as another internal drive installed. Any guidance would be appreciated!

Thanks! I am SOOOO glad I found this forum! Everyone seems so helpful and knowledgeble....

now i know this is an older topic
It certainly is. I only stumbled on your post because I went back through "My Posts" and found this at #243. And since this topic is marked "Answered", a lot of people are not going to bother looking at it again.

You really should start a new topic when you have a problem. There is no harm in referencing an old topic and saying you did the things suggested there – in fact that is a very good start.

So you have the same error as T Poulter? Did you try my suggestions in this post and this one? (Do the command in that second post before the reboot command).

Start a new topic for any response, but put a little post here so I know you've done it 🙂

Hi I followed your steps to rebuild the corrupt database. When I startup I now get a repeating screen like Ric had, not the movie, but a repeating screen. To quote you you said:

"Hi Ric

That is peculiar. Try again, but this time type (carefully)

rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
(note - no space between '/' and '.') before the "reboot" command.

If you had properly renamed the "local.nidb" directory to "local.nidb.bad", then the startup scripts should execute the above command, which is why I didn't bother posting it. But there is no harm in doing it twice."

What did you mean specifically when you say Try Again? Startup in command+s, cd to the directory and then type the "rm" code? I did this, but it stated "no such directory" or the like.

I started a new topic about my troubles, you can read it here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=472226&tstart=0

Thanks!!

Last night I was simultaneosly updating OSX and my iPod using Software Update, when the screen dimmed and turned grey with the message stating that I needed to restart my computer by holding down the power button. Upon doing so the screen turned black instead of booting up normal and went into Darwin/BSD (console). From there i followed the instructions posted to boot in single user mode this morning and got this error message from the log
System Starter[53]: the Following StartupItems failed to properly start:
/Library/StarupItemsVirtualPCOSServices
- execution of Startup script failed
/System/Library/CoreServices/Loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow: Login Window Application Started
crashdump[193]: Setup Assistant crashed

this crashdump[193]: Setup Assistant crashed keeps repeating, is there anyway to repair this or remove the problem with Virtual PC, i have always had problems running that program?

OK -- I have a similar problem with different results on applying fixes I've read about on the forum. Stymied at present time. Need help !!

I have an PowerMac Dual G4 here that we are trying to fix. What
has happend is that the machine boots to the black
Darwin/BSD (Lan.Local) (console)
Login: screen.
I have tried to login with the login name and
password but it says that login failed and reboots.

I have also tried rebooting in the single user mode by holding command key and S key down at reboot. No Change. Takes me right back to the login screen.>
is there anyway to change it so that it boot back to
the gui mode?

To further complicate matters I cannot get the CD drawer to open, so am unable to insert another fixit disk.

Would appreciate a helping hand
