Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Finder requires password for moving or deleting files every time.

Since installing OS X Lion I have been required to enter my user password everytime I move a file from the desktop to a folder, from folder to folder, or from anywhere into the trash. This is a nuisance. How do I reconfigure the operating system, so that I no longer need to enter my password every time I simply wish to move a file from place to place?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

+RadRod: As with some of the others on this, thanks RadRod, for your persistency and for sharing. Tried everything under the "Apple" and nothing worked. This simple (right in front of me) solution took care of this unexpected, highly annoying and time consuming issue.

Probably would've taken another several hours to resolve this issue without your post. Again, thanks for sharing.

My issue was similar but only involved some directories. What fixed it for me was to get info on my home directory and re-apply the read & write permissions (it was already set to read/write) to enclosed items for my user account. It took a long time but it worked.

I tried doing the same thing to just the directories I was having issues with and it didn't work for some reason. Doing this on the home directory did work though.

Just very late answer to this thread - and on Mavericks - but I had the same issue as the original poster, with permission showing OK from an ls -al in the console, but with the same double "everyone" account on the permission in the Get Info on a file. One of them said custom, and overrode my own access (which it shouldn't - that's a bug). A bit of fooling around revealed that the "custom everyone" came from file sharing permissions. I went to Settings->Sharing, and removed the shared folders that had special "everyone" permission - that was my Documents folder. It should have been enough to fix the problem and remove the extra buggy everyone permission but didn't (that's another bug). So on top of that I had to go to the Document folder itself, get info, check that permissions were correct (RW for me, R for everyone), then click the gear at the bottom and choose to apply to all folders inside. Now my Mac works again, I can move, delete and save files that I own (you'd hope you should be able to do that always, but apparently you don't). So it looks like the bug did not get fixed in Mavericks either, that it comes from a double but in sharing, but at least there is a workaround.

I know this is a really old discussion but I ran into this problem today unable to delete items from desktop. It would require a password, i'd enter password and it would make the trash crumple sound but wouldn't delete. Didn't get any errors or anything. Simply wouldn't delete.

I finally discovered that it was a super simple solution for me.

I right clicked on an empty space on the desktop and chose "Get Info" (which was for the Desktop folder itself"

I saw that the folder was locked for some reason. I unchecked "Locked" box and what do you know. Problem solved.

Didn't have to do any command line repairs nor install 3rd party app to fix.

Not sure if this would work for everyone's particular circumstances but figured i'd post it as a possible solution as it's super easy to check and fix.

Hope this helps at least one person 🙂

OK, go to finder Preferences and check "Hard Disks" so your Hard Drive appears on your desktop. Right click over the drive and select "Get Info" from the pull down menu. Open "Sharing & Permissions". If you are not listed Unlock the "info" screen at the bottom right (little padlock) and add yourself (plus sign). Once you are listed choose your privilege as "Read & Write". If you are already listed your privilege is probably "read only". Change it to "Read & Write". If you're listed and your privilege is "Read & Write" then you have a bigger problem than I had. Good luck.
