After running iTunes, Macbook pro won't shutdown

I am using iTunes 10.4 and have recently installed the Lion OS. The problem has existed for about 3 months now (I was running snow leopard and iTunes 10.3), I have been to the Genius Bar numerous times, on the phone with Apple Care and in many chat rooms, all to no avail... The problems is that if I open iTunes at anytime after starting my system, then I am unable to shutdown. The screen usually goes as far as the bluish/gray screen with the spinning ball but then I have to hold in the power button to shut it down completely. This problem does not occur when i run any other program, only when I use itunes. Activity monitor claims itunes is closed and not using any CPU, so I really don't know what the problem could be! I have used the repair function in disc utility and I have done a complete system re-install (once with time machine and once without), nothing seems to work! Any suggestions out there on how to solve this annoying problem?

I have a lot of music on my computer. Nearly 55 gigs. After I reached a certain unknown amount my iMac has been freezing every time:

  • I listen to music - it will stop half way through a song and then give the rainbow wheel.
  • Add new songs to my library - will happen occassionaly, forcing me to manually restart.
  • Turn on Genius

NB: None of the songs are corrupt as they all work perfectly on my iPod!

At first we thought it was the new iPod that I bought which was giving me trouble. We found that that iPod was corrupt and I got it replaced. I later discovered it was actually my computer that was giving me the trouble as the same thing still happened with the new iPod.

After taking my computer to apple, they suggested a hardrive replacement, which worked until I started using iTunes excessively.

I will probably take my computer to apple again because applecare does not know how to fix my problem, but I would like to avoid doing that as I am very busy and I do not have to to continuously take my computer to the store.

My computer does unfreeze after about 5 minutes, but then continuously freezes after I press a mouse button or keyboard, or try to open an application. (almost seizure-like).

Is it a problem with RAM or memory?

Please help me!

PS My friends have told me to put my music on an external hardrive but that it is a huge inconvencience as I like my computer to be up to date with my iPod.

i am having this same problem. Running OSX 10.6.8. No version of itunes will work and i have to hard shut down. i have tried everything to sort it out from reparing hard disc and permissions to wiping all of my music deleating all itunes finles and references and reinstalling old applications. the program opens and shuts fine and i can even shut down the macbook until i try to import or listen to music. the program runs fine but i have to hard shut down after use. i have noticed that the updater will not recognize i am running an old version of itunes and that it needs to be updated. also the import cd function asks me 2 times if i want to import the cd to itunes library. this is frustration X 100.

I’ve discovered something else that might be relevant to this. Last week, I got an iPod Classic 7G. When I hook it up to the MBP, I can transfer everything to it, just fine. However, when I go t to eject it, I get the following message:

The iPod “Jeff’s iPod” cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found.

The iPod still appears on the desktop, inaccessible, with the icon grayed out. It does not, however, continue to appear in iTunes. (My iPad, however, does continue to appear.) The iPod itself still displays “Connected,” but meets the criteria for safe disconnect per Knowledge Base article #TS1709. (Once I physically disconnect the iPod, the “Connected” message is replaced with “Okay to Disconnect” and a progress bar, which eventually completes and leaves a fully functional iPod.)

Meanwhile, with the iPod ‘missing’ from iTunes and grayed out in the Finder, iTunes 10.6 can no longer quit. When I try (whether via File→Quit, ⌘Q, or →Shut Down…), iTunes will freeze completely, requiring a force quit; and Finder will display the same behavior. Once I force-quit either iTunes or Finder, neither they nor any other app can be launched until I force–shut down the computer, reboot, and log in anew.

I doubt any of this helps directly, but I do think it constitutes another piece to this puzzle. I’ll be on with AppleCare again, today, to see if we can make any more progress. (The last guy told me to reinstall the OS, but this is happening on two different computers, so I’m pretty dang reluctant to do that.)
