Missing emails in Mail - Lion deleting them?

I'm using Mail with two IMAP accounts (oneis gmail), and I'm experiencing a little weirdness.

I seem to be missing emails coming in, which I'm not deleting or filing away.

I got in late last night and checked my emails on my iPhone. I read one that needed to be replied to today, then closed Mail on my iPhone and went to bed.

This morning, I jumped on my Lion iMac and opened Mail - and the email I read on my iPhone doesn't appear in my inbox. I checked on my iPhone and iPad and it's not there either.

I didn't delete it or move it or do anything other than read it on my iPhone.

I asked on another forum, and one person said the following:

I am experiencing the same thing. I seem to be able to send email from the Lion's new Mail, but can't receive any.

I have several mail accounts in Mail and the problem seem to be the same with all of them regardless of whether on exchange server or not. The strange thing is that I can see and read some of the "invisible" incoming mail in my iPhone, but if I try to refresh my Mail accounts on mac, it may delete the new emails also from my iPhone! The disappearing emails are nowhere to be found and I have also checked the external exchange service mail boxes and junk mail and spam boxes.

Quite serious bug causing a lot of harm!

So it doesn't seem to be just me.

Anyone else?

Cheers.

I'm having the exact same problem that you describe. In some cases incoming mail appears in the inbox for a few seconds, but then dissappears and I'm unable to find it anywhere.

How many account folders are to be seen in the Mail folder?

I have not experimented with iClound versions, but Mobile Me accounts are IMAP, and if forcing a reindexing via the removal of the Envelope Index file would need to be removed. Such would be the case for iClound, if an account has been created.

I was using a modified version of what is cited here:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/4.0/en/14019.html

You could also simply remove the Gmail account in the Preferences, and later after quitting and relaunching Mail, add it back. But more about any other accounts, first.

Improper indexing is the primary reason that message known to be a mailbox do not display, btw.

Deleted those two mailboxes, quit, emptied Mail trash, removed another version of the yokey from the Library/Mail folder, restarted Mail, rebuilt mailboxes, invoked St Brigid, patron of poets (her feast day's eve today, after all), and Mercury, tutelary god of postal staff, and counted the mails in Workshop: 12, including two I'd just sent as test mails.

In the Mail folder, open the IMAP account folder and look for the Workshop.imapmbox folder -- is there one? If so, then within that open the folder named Messages and report how many xxxxx.emlx files are there?

Now in the Mail folder open the Mailboxes folder -- is there any xxxxx.mbox folder there that is named Workshop? If so, check its Messages folder content.

Suddenly, I'm now receiving all incoming e-mail for an IMAP account in my mac.com (iCloud) account. I checked the setting and everything appears to be OK.

How did this sudden ghost in the machine appear and any ideas how to correct it? (No doubt, something to do with the awful Lion) I'm guessing I should delete the existing IMAP and then reset it. But, will I lose the e-mails that have been saved in the account?

Yes I have to hosted exchange accounts and im having the same issue. sometime mail will empty out my inbox and then sometimes all the emails will reappear. And this usually only happens on one account at a time. meaning one email account will show all emails and the other will be empty, then it will happen to both and then back again. I've been using outlook which works fine for me, but I wanted to limit my third party apps and just use mail, but I cant until they fix this bug.

Not missing, just hidden? When I view all of my "mailboxes" sometimes there are items not listed that can be seen when I click on a particular mailbox. This is without any selection criteria entered.

I sure hope Apple realizes how critical an issue this is for all of us??? I fully expected 10.7.3 to fix this...

The issue of being unable to search for mail, or view mail that is actually on my computer is a royal pain!!!

I am a business user in a higher management position. Several critical mails completely dissapeared before and it happened to me again in 10.7.3. It is so embarrassing that I am running around asking people to send me messages again with silly excuses, (inadvertent deletion, machine crashed etc) as no one would believe me if I say that it is Apple delivering such flawed software. (and avoid the sniggering "take a winPC, Apple was so gooood wasnt it?")

I have transferred the POP and IMAP accounts to Thunderbird, but I still have two important exchange accounts which are not supported by TB.

Does anyone have a good suggestion on how to move away from Mac mail. I had Entourage before but that was a small disaster as well. Any experiences out there with Outlook 2011?

Thanks

It depends ... Outlook 2011 is an excellent Exchange client while managing to be an awful neary everything else client (but it is good at POP) use it with your Exchange Server and use TB for everything else.

Mac Mail will handle Exchange accounts fairly well (some limitations especially with delegates) and is a superb Imap client.
