Missing emails in Mail - Lion deleting them?

I'm using Mail with two IMAP accounts (oneis gmail), and I'm experiencing a little weirdness.

I seem to be missing emails coming in, which I'm not deleting or filing away.

I got in late last night and checked my emails on my iPhone. I read one that needed to be replied to today, then closed Mail on my iPhone and went to bed.

This morning, I jumped on my Lion iMac and opened Mail - and the email I read on my iPhone doesn't appear in my inbox. I checked on my iPhone and iPad and it's not there either.

I didn't delete it or move it or do anything other than read it on my iPhone.

I asked on another forum, and one person said the following:

I am experiencing the same thing. I seem to be able to send email from the Lion's new Mail, but can't receive any.

I have several mail accounts in Mail and the problem seem to be the same with all of them regardless of whether on exchange server or not. The strange thing is that I can see and read some of the "invisible" incoming mail in my iPhone, but if I try to refresh my Mail accounts on mac, it may delete the new emails also from my iPhone! The disappearing emails are nowhere to be found and I have also checked the external exchange service mail boxes and junk mail and spam boxes.

Quite serious bug causing a lot of harm!

So it doesn't seem to be just me.

Anyone else?

Cheers.

I'm having the exact same problem that you describe. In some cases incoming mail appears in the inbox for a few seconds, but then dissappears and I'm unable to find it anywhere.

Same here -- I'm losing occasional sent mail. On the message I replied to, the reply arrow shows, but when I click on it, it says it can't find the sent message and it must have been deleted. Not. Ugh. Love Lion. Mail is a complete mess. Have spent the last hour downloading alternate email clients and being very annoyed. Can't use it if it's losing mail on me (along with some of the rules not working and the junk mail filter being completely useless). I've rebuilt and the issues always come back. Please fix. No Mail for me until it's updated.

Mac Mail strangeness continues. Mail problems disappeared for a while, and now have returned.

Emails that I sent over the past two days are not appearing in the "Sent" folder. I checked directly on Yahoo's webmail Sent folder, and it is only missing the emails sent today.

Further oddity, activity constantly displays a huge number of incoming emails (22000+ or 55000) which then never appear. Just constantly downloading then, never appearing.

I have the same issue. What I found though is that the mails must still be in the files on the MAC.

The reason for this thought is that I am using Mailsteward as my mail archiving utility.

If I archive my Mail boxes with Mailsteward that these mails appear in the search functions of MS.

Still in Mail the stay "lost"

This means that the OSX Lion mail client is the culprit.

As usual Apple is silent about their serious bugs, we also had to kill the LDAP server on another majosr issue with login security.

Similar problem. I'm using a Yahoo account (IMAP) with Mail.app., and I am missing (only) three messages in inbox, not all of them (or a folder as a whole). I am quite sure about not having deleted them, but I cannot find them anywhere, neither in my computer nor in Yahoo! mail web access.

I checked the trash folders (both in my computer and in Yahoo web access), they are not there, although there are older deleted messages still waiting, i.e. I didn't accidentally delete them (and emptied the trash).

I dont't know whether it is of relevance, but all the three missing messages had pdf attachments.

I just switched from MS and I don't want going back to using Office etc. But missing emails are quite frustrating, as I rely on them for business.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Do you have any other device (computer or other) that could be accessing the account as POP, and be set to remove from account? Or could another computer or device have a Rule to Move messages with attachments to a mailbox not on the server. If another computer declared a message to be SPAM because of its content, could it have a disposition for the message that is not on the server?

I have only have an iPhone4, which I use to access emails, as well. And there is no other device.

I have no rules related to these messages, and I checked every folder including spam, bulk, junk, whatever you name it, as well. I searched for them with spotlight, too. No trace.

The bad thing with the missing mails is, similar to the original post, I have read them several times in my Inbox with my computer, and after a while (or after something) they are simply gone. And I don't know when and how it will happen again.

I was quiet sure about something like this happening to me only because of my fault (although I don't know how), but having read similar problems occuring to other people, is it likely to be a bug to be handled by Apple? Or will re-installing Mail (or doing anything else) help to not having it again?

I'm also having strange disappearances of emails that I have sent using the Lion Mail client.

These are emails that I know I have sent and know that I haven't deleted them on any device connected to my MobileMe account.

However when I try to find them in the Sent folder (in one case to discuss its contents with the person I sent it to so I know I sent it!) they are gone. I log in to my .me account and they are also gone.

The first time this happened I thought it was my imagination and that I simply hadn't sent the email. The second time I'm certain there is something weird happening between this the mail client (I'm a new Lion user as recently upgraded from a MBP to MBA that came with Lion) and I've never experienced this kind of vanishing email before.

That the emails are also missing from my .me account is particularly worrying as it suggests they are gone forever and these are important business emails that I can not afford to lose.

Any thoughts from anybody as to why this may be happening and any idea for recovery would restore my confidence.

Thanks!

I'm having this problem as well. I'm using Apple Mail on Lion to access a Yahoo Plus account via IMAP. For a few weeks I've noticed random messages going missing from various folders. A moment ago, it finally happened right in front of my eyes. I clicked on a folder and saw a message in the list (it was the message I was looking for). Before I could click on it, the list refreshed itself and the message was gone. I checked my iPhone and the Yahoo mail website and it was missing from there as well. This was an email from a client with data I need to access. This is the second email from this client that has vanished in this way and it's embarrasing to have to continually go back to the client to resend emails. It makes me look unprofessional.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to stop using Apple Mail until this is fixed.

As a software developer, I know how tricky something random like this can be to track down. Are there logs I can upload or something that might help?

thanks,

I have the same problem. My primary business account (GoDaddy supported) comes in on my iPad and iPhone fine. If I read it on either of those devices before I read it on my MacBook Pro it does not show up in the inbox on my computer for about 24 hours. Then suddenly it's there in the Inbox. I've also seen it come in on my computer and then disappear. I have all my accounts set to IMAP. If I read the email on my computer before my devices then I can see it, but sometimes it disappears. Please advise, I cannot continue to use Mail with this problem.

Similar problem which I had assumed was iCloud but now seems more like Lion. I have screen shots showing Inbox on iCloud in Browser and InBox in Mail and one email is clearly missing in Mail. I was able to forward it to myself to my second account (POP) and now have it safe in Mail, but clearly this is a very serious problem re Mail.

Amazed how difficult to get any support direct from Apple on this. I set up an Express Lane case but the computer voice did not invite me to give case number and started asking questions all over insisting on hardware number and charging accordingly - I gave up.
