Missing emails in Mail - Lion deleting them?

I'm using Mail with two IMAP accounts (oneis gmail), and I'm experiencing a little weirdness.

I seem to be missing emails coming in, which I'm not deleting or filing away.

I got in late last night and checked my emails on my iPhone. I read one that needed to be replied to today, then closed Mail on my iPhone and went to bed.

This morning, I jumped on my Lion iMac and opened Mail - and the email I read on my iPhone doesn't appear in my inbox. I checked on my iPhone and iPad and it's not there either.

I didn't delete it or move it or do anything other than read it on my iPhone.

I asked on another forum, and one person said the following:

I am experiencing the same thing. I seem to be able to send email from the Lion's new Mail, but can't receive any.

I have several mail accounts in Mail and the problem seem to be the same with all of them regardless of whether on exchange server or not. The strange thing is that I can see and read some of the "invisible" incoming mail in my iPhone, but if I try to refresh my Mail accounts on mac, it may delete the new emails also from my iPhone! The disappearing emails are nowhere to be found and I have also checked the external exchange service mail boxes and junk mail and spam boxes.

Quite serious bug causing a lot of harm!

So it doesn't seem to be just me.

Anyone else?

Cheers.

I'm having the exact same problem that you describe. In some cases incoming mail appears in the inbox for a few seconds, but then dissappears and I'm unable to find it anywhere.

Ernie, GoDaddy has offered to delete and re-create my account with no loss of information. I am holding on taking any action because things seem to be working right now, though I have not made any changes. I have referred them to this forum and was told that they would look into it, though I'm not holding my breath.

You mentioned that you have an account with GoDaddy and are entitled to an email address with your site. Have you had a chance to explore that?

I am having the same problem. Several consecutive days worth of email just vanished into thin air. Now some emails come in, and some don't. I'm still able to check my mail on my older mac, and all of them are showing up normally there. Even the mail that does come into Lion Mail comes in oddly, marked as "read" before I've read it.

I can't belive that this has been happing to people for at least five months without a fix.

I contacted Go Daddy last week to inform them of this issue, and the discussions surrounding it. The tech support rep looked up my account, stated that there was indeed a sync issue, and that he had fixed the problem. That was 5 days ago, and I haven't had any mail problems. I'm hesitant to say that the problem is completely gone, because it's been such a frustrating and intermittent matter.

So far, everything has been working well. I'll report back if the outcome changes.

Altantur, have you made any progress?

I have recently attempted (at great cost) to switch to Mac but am experiencing exactly the same problems as you. A couple of times I have witnessed the 'deleting'. Today I noticed the pie in the small white circle next to the folder vanish to nothing as the messages disappeared. Sometimes it takes a whole folder but today it took just a few from the folder. Tried quiting and re-entering mail but no luck. My MacBook is the only machine on the system, no other computers or iphone. Messages are not in 'trash' and also wiped clean off my ymail account.

Just like you and everybody else this is causing me severe grief!

Dear Nilechamp, unfortunately no progress yet. As I wrote before, I switched back to Snow Leopard and gave up using Mail. I'm using the Yahoo webmail. It is at least reliable.

I'm hoping to get some good news about an updated version of Mail/Lion someday, to be able to start using them again. (Is there anybody from Apple listening???)

I'm having the same problem, messages appear in inbox for a second before vanishing completely - no trace of them whatsoever on any of my macs, or iOS devices, or my webmail (all setup as IMAP). The problem is definitely Lion Mail because as soon as I stopped using it, all works as expected on my iOS devices plus webmail. As a precaution I'm forwarding all mail to gMail in case this problem resurfaces.

Extremely frustrating and disappointing that Apple hasn't acknowledged let alone resolved this critical issue which is obviously affecting many users. And how the **** do we actually contact someone to report this issue!?!

Long time mac fan but getting pretty cheesed off now >-(

The last time I reported on my IMAP/Mail problem was about 2 weeks ago, and I'm happy (albeit a touch hesitant) to say that the problem hasn't surfaced again. In my case, the issue was resolved by contacting Go Daddy and asking them to look into the synchronization of my e-mail account. They performed a resync, and things have been working well for over 2 weeks. I'm still waiting to see if there's a problem, but I'm still doing fine.

Dec 20, 2011 1:49 PM in response to wprasek

wprasek,

My problems were resolved when, like Temby, I had Go Daddy re-synch my account. It took two calls, as the first "lower level" attempt didn't work. For the second attempt, I was told that the synch would take up to 2 hours to complete and I haven't had any trouble since. That was Dec 1st. While I was losing emails, I noticed, like Koue, that the missing emails would reappear the next day.

What surprises me is that your loss is extending to your webmail. WhiIe emails were vanishing from Apple Mail, my other mail carriers: webmail, gmail, and iPhone were all working fine. It was only Apple Mail that was experiencing trouble. Don't know if your account is with Go Daddy but if so, I would start there. If the synching doesn't work, they can delete and recreate your account. That would be your last ditch attempt with your ISP. Good luck to you.

I think that whether or not your email also disappears from your webmail client depends on how you have that client configured. I completely lost the mail from two of my webmail clients/servers, but not from the others.

While I could not reclaim emails from thoses two webmail clients that I had not previously backed up, I did find a solution that stopped the problem from continuing, and have had no new problems for two weeks, or so, now. Here are the instructions for that fix:

Well here is it Dec 27 and I am still having a problem with my email, only this time I can receive but can not send any emails, I have tried all of my account to send an email and they all just spin and spin and then ask me for my password which is already in the computer. If I type the same email on my IPAD and hit send guess what IT GOES OUT!!!! What a bummer, because Ihave to sacan some docs and send them out.
