Missing emails in Mail - Lion deleting them?

I'm using Mail with two IMAP accounts (oneis gmail), and I'm experiencing a little weirdness.

I seem to be missing emails coming in, which I'm not deleting or filing away.

I got in late last night and checked my emails on my iPhone. I read one that needed to be replied to today, then closed Mail on my iPhone and went to bed.

This morning, I jumped on my Lion iMac and opened Mail - and the email I read on my iPhone doesn't appear in my inbox. I checked on my iPhone and iPad and it's not there either.

I didn't delete it or move it or do anything other than read it on my iPhone.

I asked on another forum, and one person said the following:

I am experiencing the same thing. I seem to be able to send email from the Lion's new Mail, but can't receive any.

I have several mail accounts in Mail and the problem seem to be the same with all of them regardless of whether on exchange server or not. The strange thing is that I can see and read some of the "invisible" incoming mail in my iPhone, but if I try to refresh my Mail accounts on mac, it may delete the new emails also from my iPhone! The disappearing emails are nowhere to be found and I have also checked the external exchange service mail boxes and junk mail and spam boxes.

Quite serious bug causing a lot of harm!

So it doesn't seem to be just me.

Anyone else?

Cheers.

I'm having the exact same problem that you describe. In some cases incoming mail appears in the inbox for a few seconds, but then dissappears and I'm unable to find it anywhere.

All of a sudden I am having the same problem on my Macbook Pro! i tried everything regarding server addresses, port changes, contacting Apple (I just went out of Tech Help). They suggested I try a one-time $50 question! Forget That! The machine is less than 5 months old....I checked the amt. of space I used, perhaps that is a cause for slowing down. It's not that. My iphones have same address and send mail easily, it is a problem with just my Mac/settings/Lion or something. Any other suggestions?

contact your email provider. have them check and re-check sync settings for your account. For me, AppleMail was a separate issue from my iPhone. Teling my ISP that I was going to change providers if they didn't resolve my problem seemed to help.

By the way, I'm having other, issues with Apple Mail crashing during email editing. Apple is aware but has no fix yet.

All of a sudden my emails are not showing up in sent mail. They are not on my gmail either. I noticed it today and wasn't sure if it was sent so I called the gal and she said she got it. I heard the noise that sounded like it was sent. I have done several test emails and still it is not showing up. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not a computer gugu! I just need this to work and don't know what to do. I cannot afford to be spending $50 for this. Restarting mail did not help me.

I discovered today, as I close the accounting year, that I too am missing emails!! I upgraded a MacBook Pro to Lion about two months ago and upgraded to a new MacBook Pro late December. I am screwed. These are receipts, many from Apple store. While I made a backup disk and the data can be requested, this is a royal pain in the butt.

I have also noted that four other files (all Avery labels ".cdnx") went missing in the past few days. Today I lost an MS Word file. I SAW IT HAPPEN AS I WAS WORKING ON THE DOCUMENT. I edited a document for the fifth or sixth time, then I quit. MS Word and it never asked if I wanted to save my changes. The OS DELETED the file entirely!!!

I am starting to suspect a MAJOR bug related to Lion.

*** IS GOING ON? APPLE PLEASE FIX!

I am a new mac/ apple mail user and have experienced a similar issue. But I have since found that switching off 'organize by conversation' and checking that 'sort by' is set to 'date' and 'descending' solved my disappearance problem. Check the 'viewing' preferences as well. These settings are somewhat unfamiliar to a former windows user. Perhaps this could help. Best of luck.

Just in the week before christmas we got a new mac with lion on it. All others are SL. This week the collegue with the new mac opened her mail and now all new emails that came during the holidays are deleted (several 100s). We lost the mails that were in shared accounts. The mail server is our own running SL Server. In this office erveryone has one account for himself and another account that is shared for info mails. So all of them have (at least) two accounts in Mail.app.

It seems that the mail app in Lion deletes the mail in the second and further account on getting the mail from the server. We could see the mails in the webmail on the server and then after opening mail on the new mac they were gone without leaving a trace. Even in the logfiles on the server is no hint what has happened.

To me it is clear that there must be a bug in mail.app with handling more than one account.

In my case all the missing emails were in Yahoo Mail. I am not a premium user (which implies that no IMAP access is provided). But I was accessing my account as if it was an IMAP account through Mail (same folders, mails etc. in all devices...), which it is configured automatically by Mail itself.

I thought it was a feature granted only for Mac OS (Lion and Snow Leopard), as it is in iOS devices. Is it true?

Do you think it might be relevant?

Well, I see that is no solution for it, right? I am having this same issue, and it was before Lion! Using IMAP account in iphone - no problems, but when I use it in Mac Mail, it`d be a surprise... a bad one!! Many stored emails, some with attached files, that was stored in some specific folder in my Yahoo! account, for example, simply desepeared... I had the opportunity to watch it happening in front of me! One e-mail was in my iphone, stored in my "office" folder, it was, of course, in the same folder accessing from web mail, and then, just after load the mac mail, it was`nt there, and I could saw it desappearing in my iphone and web mail.

Well, for all apple developers... it is monstruos.. It is simply a desaster.. imagne an importante email received in my iphone, stored in a folder I wanted, then I come home, open my mac mail, wait for sync, the email desapears!

Well really hope it to be fixed, or, I`ll have to use another mail manager.

My Mail problem started after upgrading to Lion. I wish I would've pinpointed when it started happening. My question about the iPhone was simply to see if this is a Mail only problem or one where the iPhone is somehow involved. If someone pops up and says, "Nope, I don't have an iPhone," then question answered. I think just because you and I never had a problem with Mail and our iPhones before does not preclude the iPhone from somehow being involved. The only account this happens to me in is in AOL - both POP and IMAP (tried both). I was thinking AOL was the culprit - I don't have my iPhone delete messages from the server, but I know AOL moves messages from Unread to Read mailboxes, and thought maybe that's when things disappeared and went into limbo - somehow. Pure speculation.

Yep, may lot`s of devices using same imap ports.... but I don`t understand it, `cause I am not a developer, but maybe the way Mail uses to manage accounts, don`t know, the time it let to sync, the protocol it uses, could crash the web mail provider. I saw emails desapearing from nothing, but I can especulate, too, that the problem occurs when Mac Mail is "downloading" the new contents (new emails and attachs...) from server, specially the ones that you have alredy changed the locataion (from inbox to stored mails, for example). And it happens too, when you received an email in mac mail, but you want to store it in one folder (that was originally created in you server), for example. So basically I think it happens when mac mail si sync the new "data".
