Turn off "Reopen windows when logging back in"

Unfortunately, there is no way. It will always go back to being checked.

Until a dot release comes out to allow users to control it, you will have to manually uncheck the "Reopen windows when logging back in" box each time you restart/shutdow/log off.

I am so suprised that there isn't a plist to edit so that you could have uncheck the dialogue box set as default.

I am just going to add my voice/vote to this discussion... We need to have control over this kind of feature!!!

I wonder if Tinkertool or cocktail has it? Will have to look.

I am so completely fed up with having to uncheck the checkbox every time I shut my Macs down. Ridiculous! Don't Apple actually user test these things?

A quick and easy way to unselect the option is to hit the space bar before logging out.

I want the option to turn this off permanently, as well.

I hope user control of this 'feature' comes soon.

That's a good workaround, but I would perfer the Ron Popeil methed. "Set it and forget it."

Try this.

Step 1: Go to ‘System Preferences’.

Step 2: Find the ‘General’ menu' and open it.

Step 3: Go to the bottom under “Number of recent items”

Step 4: Unclick the box “Restore windows when quiting and re-opening apps”.

That setting in SysPrefs does not control the behavior of the logout dialog.

I found for me, the easiest way is to just hold down the option key when selecting restart from the Apple menu. It skips the dialog box alltogether. No matter what apps you have open at the time of shut down, they will not relaunch automatically using this method.
